Has anyone given a Sportster SL semi-auto a good shake down?
Any good?

no one i know of has tried it. and to tell you the truth................. for the money i would buy a marlin semi if i was you. i know 2 guys that have the clip model, and i have shot them both, and they both shoot GREAT. i cant say about the ones with the tube feed.

VC, I have 2 Marlin Model 60's with tube feed and they are awesome. Accurate and reliable, what more could you ask for. Where are the Semi-auto Sportsters made, China perhaps? If I remember there was some discussion they may be manufactured in the Phillipines....<><.... :grin:

i have a marlin 60 tube feeder up here at camp that i bought in 1981. it still shoots good, but the receiver get buggered up where the steel bolt hits it. it gets filed down about twice a decade.

Y'all's response is kinda funny. I already own a very old Glenfield 60 (Mod. 75C carbine) that I love. I'm waiting for parts to get it going again--the nylon bolt buffer disintegrated a week ago.

But I got the NEF catalog in the mail and saw their semi. I assumed it was US made.

I see Mod. 60s all the time for $50 or so. (I may have to buy one to figure out how to put the Glenfield back together.)

A model 60 in good shape for $50 is a great deal. It will reliably and accurately last through you and your children and perhaps your grandchildren....<><.... :grin:

The NEW NEF selfloader is just the OLD Squires-Bingham out of the Phillipines. I'd let a few thousand other people be the first to test it.

You want a .22 autoloader, save yourself a lot of aggravation and buy a Ruger 10/22. Generally speaking, I like Marlins, but the Model 60 ain't one of the ones I like. Unless they have upgraded in the last few years, the loading block that feeding depends on is a worthless chromed zinc die casting made to about the tolerances of your average ice cube and the "ejector" is a stray tail of a spring left sticking out.

But didn't several thousand people buy them in 1977?

I had a rain check to get one at KMart when they were on closeout about 25 years ago, seems like it was 30 or 40 dollars. Unfortunately, nobody ever told me to come pick up my new gun.
I eventually got a basket case Glenfield 60 instead for $10. I polished the hammer too much and it broke. Still have the Glenfield, it shoots even with the broken hammer and I never bothered to replace it. (I did buy a new hammer 15 years ago, but I'd lose my 2lb trigger if I replaced it, and that was the first trigger job I ever did)
If the new NEF is made in Phillipines and still has the semi-exotic hardwood stock I might be interested. The S-B was quite accurate for a semi auto, at least back then before the tooling had 25-30 years of wear on it.
Mitch
