Tips for Montague
« on: June 20, 2004, 02:59:46 PM »
I am new to the site and new to hunting in Alaska, but could use some good tips for hunting Montague Island. Matt in AK and I are stationed together, both in the sand box and in AK, and it was he who turned me on to this site. Myself and five buddies of mine have a hunt reserved for Montague in early November and was wondering if anybody had any tips for deer and brown bear. We're staying by Port Chalmers, where Matt got his two deer. I'm pretty excited about this one!

Thanks Matt in AK for the tips you've provided already and it was a pleasure working with you!

First thanks for serving our country!  :D

The deer hunting on the islands depends muchly upon the snowfall. The deer hang high in the alpine medows in the summers where the major food sources are.  As the snow level on the mountains falls, so does the level at which the deer are at.  So much is dependent on the weather.

The weather can also make or break the trip.  Moving from sand to maybe 8-9 foot seas can be a change for sure.  Gales move into the sound in the fall and can make or break the trip. Be prepared for wet weather, take gloves that are water proof or dry quickly and extra foot ware.  18" insulated rubber boots for LaCrosse work great for walking around.  Yes the land is wet!

You might want to look at Matts and my posts below on deer hunting for more information.  If you need anymore information please post again as were always willing to help here in Alaska.
