Stuck barrel
« on: August 24, 2005, 12:50:34 PM »
I've been watching a DW SS .44 Mag in an area gun shop.  The price started at $495 but today was at $395.  I was real interested, but when I asked if I could remove the barrel (I brought my own tool), I found that after the barrrel locking nut was removed the barrel was still a totally immovable object.  The barrel was, of course, ported and the previous owner obviously failed to keep the ports and shroud clean and the whole thing was locked up tighter than a tick.  The clerk said he'd have their gunsmith free it up, but I'm not sure I want sometime that wasn't very well cared for.  I'm don't know if this does any real harm, but it does speak loudly of the knowledge of the former owner.  I'd really like a SS .44, but think I'll forget this one.  Never really liked ported barrel anyway!

You can pick up replacement barrels on the auction sights all the time, pretty cheap. I see them sell quite often for less than $50. (barrel only- barrel & shroud combos can get expensive).

If the rest of the gun checks out, I'd say $395 is a pretty good price.

barrel crud

I'd wait until all the crud is cleaned out before making a decision.  Things may turn out to look pretty good once the crud is out of the way.
