first handloads

hey everybody
just got a chance to shoot my first handloads for my savage 12fvss in   22-250.  the winchester sp really disapointed me this far, the best group to date being a little more then 1.5 inces at 100 yards, although i haven't reached max loads yet and they seemed to get tighter with the heavier loads.
just had two loads for the 55g ballistic tips and the best one gave me 0.50 and 0.58 inches, centre to centre for three shot groups. think i will tweak this one some to see if  i can reach a qurter inch. i'm quit satisfied with this for my first attempt at loading.  gotta go, i'm in the middle of class.  will keep you posted if i can improve on these groups\

I don't know your experience or shooting style, so what I say may not relate to you if you are an experienced bench shooter.

Realize when you are talking 100 yd. groops <"1.0 the load is only one of many variables.  Your consistent cheek weld, movement between shots, comfort in the shooting position, adequate hydration, and a host of other factors will be as important as the load you are using.

I'm not saying don't tweak the load, I'm saying don't blame the load unless everything else is held the same.

22Savage, what powder are you using?  You're getting good groups already but I'm always curious what powders people like for certain calibers.  My 22-250 always doted on H-414, but also shot well with IMR-4064 and 4350.  How do you like the rifle so far?  Does it shoot factory loads well?

If you insist on tweaking, bullet seating depth can make a LOT of difference.  That's where I'd start, then vary the powder charges, up .2 grains at a time until you find "The Load", or get pressure signs.

It's hard not to love a 22-250!  Have fun and stay safe

wayne, i agree.  this is only the second time for me shooting off of a bench so i figure the groups would improve alot if i were more experienced. i need  to try to get alot more practice(althoug i won't complain about that  :D )
papajohn248, i was using  32.5g of imr 4064 and my seating depth was 2.48".
Got some more loaded up, just like you said, 0.2g at a time, up almost to max load.
Just one more thing, when you shoot groups, do you shoot 3 or 5 or how many shots per group?

In a 22-259 I'd shoot 5 shot groups, slowly.  You want to avoid barrel over heating.  This is a varment caliber, so you will be firing a lot of rounds at one time.  For a heavier hunting caliber, where only the first and maybe the second shot will count, 3 shot groups are adequate.

Is that savage a 1/12 twist. If so 55 grains may be too much try a 45 or 52 grain point.

I forgot to mention, the famous shooters of the turn of the previous century shot 20 shot groups!  Try that on for size.
