My .223 UV does real well with the white box 45JHP rounds. I buy out the local wally worlds every couple months at about $12 per 40 rounds, tax included.
I found a local reloader that makes a 55FMJ round that's sold through a couple gun shops in town. This stuff was good for barrel break in, and OK for just punching paper at the range, learning how to shoot the gun. One of my buddies that shoots a mini14 runs this stuff, it's less than 20 cents a round, if I remember correctly. This may be a good option for you if someone in your area has started a similar business.
At these prices, it's tough to justify buying a reloading set up.
