As you can see by my handle I am a disciple of the Scout concept. That concepts states that a scout rifle should weigh all up at 7 lbs. with scope and sling but unloaded.

On a comparison with the Win 94, one of the disadvantages of the Marlin as opposed to the the Win is weight. The Marlin comes in at about 7.5 lbs. the Win at 6.75 lbs.

I was thinking that maybe I could swab out the Marlin fore-end and stock for an Outers cadet fiberglass stock to reduce the weight.

What do you people on the forum think?

Also, has anyone got the Ashsley scout setup? What does the rifle weigh in at with this setup?

Scoutman,The concept is great have three scouts but not so hard core about a few ounces.All are light and very handy. Have a marlin 45-70 guide gun set ut up with a leupold 3 post crosshair.1.5- 2.0 inch groups at 100 yards consistant.Have a savage 110 in the scout model ,changed the trigger as good as any other rifle out of the box.Then I cut the barrel down on a 336 35cal marlin to 16 inches.set it up with a ashleys mount and another 3 post leupold EER scope. Great gun and accurate for what it is. Hope this helps.Ct Kid

I have an 1894p - short 16 inch barrel, ported, with a Burris Scout on Ashley mount, with ghost ring sights, trigger / action job and a Kick Ese pad.  Love it.

I just finished setting up 336 as a Scoutgun, 4X scope in an XS mount in front of the action, balances and handles like a dream.  

I've wanted a Scoutgun for years, since Cooper first wrote about it, but his parameters and mine are a little different.  Seven pounds all up is a nice goal, but I refuse to go to ridiculous lengths over a few ounces.  If it feels good at 7-1/2, so be it!  Cooper also alluded to a minimum caliber of 308, my needs are a little different, so a 35 Rem or 44 might work just fine.

Now if I could just get marlin to make a 357 in stainless.....sigh.
