Maine baiting referendum?
« on: May 30, 2004, 02:06:19 AM »
I haven't heard too much in the news on this issue. It seems to be a bit hushed up here in the Bay State as far as whaty is going on in Maine. Can anyone tell me how this issue is going along? Are we as sportsmen winning, losing or too early to tell?

I hate to see such a great state for bear go to blazes because of some ninnies that live in the Portland area .

So far its hard to tell who is winning.  They have the people numbers on their side in southern Maine and the emotions.  It is hard to explain to someone about maintaining safe numbers of deer, moose and bear when they really never see any.  All we can do is support IF&W and SAM in their efforts (monitarily) and get as many people out to vote as we can.  We had a loose bear in South Portland a couple weeks ago.  They had to shoot it.  Now, the anti's are claiming that someone trucked the bear in (280 pound boar) and turned it loose.  These people will go to any length.  A fellow lost two pigs to a bear down in the Augusta area.  That didn't make the news.  In the same area as the 280 pound boar a couple saw one about 5:30 in the morning but since they did not call in the cops and it didn't get shot, it did not make the news. I wonder if that one was trucked in???  If you can send a few dollars to IF&W and SAM to help pay for advertising, please do so, the anti's seem to have plenty of money.  Also, just remember, if they win here, what state is next.

Damn straight Kathy, you might not hunt with hounds but you do bait, and I'd hate to see what would happen to you and MANY other hunting lodges if this went through...

BTW Kathy, how booked is your 2005 season? I might hunt with either you or Border in Maine, or might hunt New Hampshire with Border and Maine with you if I can get this planned right...

Also, I hate to be to sound like this, but it's the Maine Bear Hunting Referendum, since it's not just baiting being gone after, it's hounding and trapping...Sorry, being a hounder I kinda wanted to point that out...

One last thing, hear's a LOT of stuff talking about why you vote NO on this issue....http://www.state.me.us/ifw/hunttrap/h-blackbear.htm

We are doing one year at a time on the bear hunting.  Have some questions in regarding 2005 but no bookings yet.

Yes it is the Bear Hunting Referendum not just baiting.  They want us to wander the woods looking for bear, up here thats a joke.  By the way, the bill is written enterestingly.  A fellow recently had a bear kill two of his pigs.  According to the bill -- you cannot shoot a bear in this instance should the referendum pass.  You have to call the police or game warden.  Recently they had a bear in metropolitan Portland.  It took a policeman two shots with a shotgun and three with his hand gun to kill the bear.  The nearest game warden was 2 hours away.  What if a bear was attacking your family member or prize horse or cow or whatever.  Do these anti's think that shooting a bear in the manner the cop used is better than a high powered rifle?  The more you think of it, the more idiotic they are.  Send in those contributions, no matter how small, IF&W can use all the help it gets.  Thanks

The sad fact is if this should pass, the black bear will become nothing more than a pest species rather than a game animal.

People in more rural locations will shoot them on sight and say nothing. In addition, some people will bait illegally.

These dim-witted people never realize the unintended consequences of their actions. They don't see all the bad things that can happen if this were to go through.

I live in the Southern part of Maine where it is the most populated and urban.

Everyone I have talked with seem to think that bears are people and should not be treated in such an inhumane manner!

However, as soon as one pops up in their backyard, they will be the first to complain that the state is not doing enough to protect them!!!!

It will really have a negative impact on the northern part of the state if this thing passes. Damn shame too.....

Last Saturday's Press Herald ran a story about all the bear sightings in Southern Maine lately.  One tried to get in a house.  Besides the one that killed the man's pigs, I understand that a goat was malled, a sheep killed, some chickens, etc.   I guess these animals are not as valuable to their owners as the wild bear.  I have never seen so many instances of bear killing livestock.  I just hope that someone jogging doesn't meet up with a bear.  One guy got slashed when he tried to take a photo of a bear in his back yard.  Of course, he was about 30 feet away and out came her two cubs.  He said he never saw an animal move so fast.  He is lucky to be alive.  The anti's have suggested that someone trucked in one bear and turned it loose.  Just keep supporting IF&W and maybe we will win this one, we better, or other states are next.

Once again Kathy:DAMN STRAIGHT

Speaking of trucking bears and stuff, the guy I know who we hunt hounds with said the guy with the top boar bear taken in the state was accussed of having the bear raised from a cub and turned lose just ahead of his waiting hounds in the truck...What a load of bullsh!t...

I hope this message reply works. Been a long time since I've been here at Graybeard Outdoors.

Anyhow there has been a lot of discussion on the issue over on the public square news forums at http://www.asmainegoes.com

If you want links to several of the specific threads especially those that are from earlier this year , just PM me here.

Thanks.

BTW at the following website you can see where the money is coming from for those on both sides of the issue.

Thank You to all who helped DEFEAT recent referendum attempts by anti hunting factions to threaten wildlife management in Maine and Alaska.

Always remain diligent.

Tim4trout - I checked out the web site.  I especially liked the one about honest government in Maine.  How about a Committee who appoints as new Commisioner of LURC (Land Use Regulation Commission) a man who has 4 citations against him for unlawful use of land near the water which LURC regulates.  No sense in suggestion a rebuttal, they will not print it.  This is one way of making the citations go away.
