In a couple of recent posts Graybeard indicated an interest in CAS. Another recent post asked what it takes to get started in CAS. The sites below should answer many of the questions posed by anyone interested in becoming a Cowboy Action Shooter.

Lotsa info thar to digest. Makes me do a bit of rethinking on what I should get before going out and checking out a shoot er two.

Lots of good information!!! But ya don't need anything at all to go check out a shoot!!!! If you already have some toys or a hat, by all means, take'em, but DO NOT wait till ya got all yer stuff. You can go in your swim suit, flip-flops, and a nose covered in zink oxide and these people would te tickeled to see ya! (Take that either way ya want. :-D ) I really believe if ya go to a shoot, it will explain more of the feelings and attitudes of the people in the sport than any thing we can say here, if have as an enjoyable time as I think you will, it will make choosing your new gear much easier. You'll have a better understanding of the basic "get-up", and looking for yours to suit your new personna will be more fun as well.

I really think the hardest part of CAS is getting up the courage to go the first time. Most people don't want to take that "step" into the unknown but, as you've read, everyone assures you that you will meet the nicest, friendliest folks at a CAS event.
To use an overused phrase: "Just do it!"

Well I've shot enough competition in so many different disciplines that taking that first step isn't a problem. Been there and done that a BUNCH of times already. With the coming of spring shortly the weather will warm and get me more in a shooting mood. Been kinda out of that mood lately since I lost my shooting partner. He used to talk me into shooting in some pretty vile weather.

Butler, I haven't had a swim suit in a LONG time. I think Faye shrunk my last one problably. She shrinks my clothes something fierce. Seems like about once a year I have to go to a larger size cuz she's done shrunk them all up so they don't fit anymore. It's gotten so bad I'm now having to buy 46 waist size pants and if she don't quit shrinking them I may hafta go to 48s. Dang it before we got married back in '65 and she started shrinking all my clothes 32s fit me fine in the waist. See what she's done? Ain't my fault don't cha know. :eek: Ain't got no flip flops neither. I'm betting I can go looking a little more proper than that. :-D

Can I wear my indian moccasins? :eek:

Will likely be either March or April before I can get to a match. I know one of the four clubs nearby holds a match each weekend. They alternate. The one at Scottsboro I think is the closest. Somebody just wrote up going to that one recently so it must either be first or last weekend of month.

By then we'll have the new store up and running if it's ever gonna be and will be settled into a routine so we can do things again.

Might get down to Houston one of these days but not this year I don't think. Mark C. a friend who works as a Houston LEO has invited me and Faye down to go hunting with him and Teresa at Rocky Top. When we can put the money and time together at a time convenient to them we're gonna head down for a visit and a hunt. Maybe we can time it so we can make one of your shoots while we're there.

Actually, in SASS at least, footgear is pretty wide open, just don show up wearin tennies! In fact, a pair of work boots will get you by most anywhere in this game, so will ropers or brogans.

One thing that is different that you need to see first hand (they don't play it up much even in videos) is the lines you say as you go. Usually only before the timer starts but sometimes during a string of shots (I'll get him! He's behind the water tank!). It was the only thing that I thought would keep me from enjoying it. Turns out, when you've got 30-50 grown men acting silly it's hard not do that yourself. It is different than other shooting sports in that respect.

Seriously, Old Cane's right. If you're up tight going into a stage with a required line to recite, odds are that by the time you get it said, your nervousness is gone. I, too, really enjoy the CAS play acting, allthough I can't seem to ever get the lines right. Texana says it is either "oltimers" disease, or a bad case of CRS.

Hearing everbody's "interpretation" of the lines is half the fun though, isn't it?
