Break Action ML's
« on: July 22, 2004, 05:33:44 AM »
I want to get away from all the lead slingers during the regular rifle season and hunt during the ML season this year. I have not hunted with a ML rifle before, but have killed Pheasants with a friend's ML shotgun.
I like the easier cleanability of the break action style rifles. I am partial to the CVA Optima Pro or the T/C Encore right now, but I would like more info. Can anyone give me their opinions on the different brands, what they like or don't like about them. I'm not trying to start a flame war, just want honest opinions.
Thanks!

First off Welcome. :)

I do not have or have had a CVA Optima Pro, so I can not comment on it. I do have a Encore 45 ans 50 cal. I think they are extremely good shooters. I like the looks, and ability to change to what ever I may want to shoot. I have not found an inline I like more.

I think just about everybody has some type of break action ML on the market now so you should have several to choose from.  They can range greatly in price and quality.  The H&R/NEF (huntsman, sidekick, heritage) are some of the least expensive and have a reputation for being good shooters but they also have some drawbacks (primarily a poorly designed breech plug and ram rod).  I've heard good and bad about the CVA's, Traditions, MDM, I've heard only bad about the Rossi's and only good about the Encore.  I havn't heard anything about the new Knight.  If price isn't a concern the encore is a great firearm and it has the added versitility of adding rifle or shotgun barrels.  Many people get addicted to the encores after buying one and find themselves selling other guns to add barrels to their collection.

I have the regular Optima. I would buy it again. I like it a lot. It's very easy to use, not that others are not, clean and shoot. Stock fits me perfectly. I have the cheapest one, blue/black, 26" barrel. Shoots one big hole at 50 yards. At 100 yards the sights cover up my 6 inch target but they all hit the target. I have mounted a 4x scope to try this year.

In my family we have a CVA optima pro, 1 TC Omega, 1 Winchester Apex, 1 Beartooth Mag and 4 TC Emcores all these are 50 calibers. They all shoot just as good as each other. Once we found what load and bullet they liked.
My favorite is the Omega, but that wasn't on your list . The cheapest is the NF Beartooth Mag and it shoots right along with the others. With the exception of the cheap ram rod ( that you can replace for about $15 with a good one) there is nothing wrong with it. It is a clone of the Optima by CVA.
The CVA Optima has a unatural look to it's butt stock and my daughter just has a hard time loading it  when she needs to seat a "tight" 3rd or 4th shot because the drop in the stock is so severe. I don't have that problem but I weigh 200#s more than her.
IMHO most all break action MZ are pretty much the same...a breech plug,a primer, a charge/bullt ,and a barrel with a scope mounted on it. I can honestly say I don't see a few hundrd $$ difference in my Omega and my Optima or it's clone the Bearthooth. 140ob

Thanks for your input guys. I was looking at the Scheel's in Lincoln, NE and came across a Traditions Pursuit model. It fit me better than the Optima or the Encore. It seemed like a well made gun, does anyone shoot one of these?

especially with any traditions gun you get what you pay for. I wouldn't buy one again.

I have a .50 MDM Buckwacka that I like a lot.  Just my .02 for what it's worth.  (Not much more than that, that's for sure.   :P )
