How is 1710 safety supposed to work?

My 1710's safety engages only when the rifle is not cocked. The safety prevents the bolt from rising. If I cock the rifle, I cannot flip the safety to S.

Is this the way it's supposed to work?

If not, is there something simple I can do to fix it, or is that a gunsmith job?

I mention this because a technical inspection guy at a recent match told me that the safeties in Hunter rifle have to work and that mine didn't.

I just had to fix one of these for a friend the other day. (I'm surprised at the number of safeties that don't work -- this one must be escaping the QC folks at Anschutz.)
There's a camming shoulder on the striker/firinig pin that the safety engages -- much in the same way that a Mauser/M70 blocks the striker.
If the relief on the pin is not cut deeply enough, the safety hits it instead of riding on it. I'd suspect that that's the problem. (Keep in mind that I'm guessing here since I don't have the rifle in hand.
If you're comfortable with filing on the pin (DON'T overdo it! Go in small steps...it's probably in need of only a touch with a fine file.) then you shouldn't have any trouble. I'd recommend that you use a file with a safe edge.
If you're not, advise me here.
Unfortunately, I just mailed the pin back (or I could have taken a digital pic to show you where it needs to be relieved) but you should have no trouble seeing what you need to do once you disassemble the bolt and note where the safety and pin come together.

Glad that I live thousands of miles away -- this could get UGLY! :)
 
Seriously, Dave's right -- If Dan can't fix your problem, it's unlikely that anyone short of the factory can. (If it's just the adjustment on the cam angle as I suspect, he'll probably need about 3 minutes; including the disassembly and reassembly. It'll take you longer to pour him a beer!)
