which bullet for Deer/Black Bear ?
« on: July 21, 2004, 04:09:09 PM »
Hi all I'm a bit new on the board,  would like a few opinions on some
bullets,   I have been reloading hornady 350 grn FN in my 45/70
(Marlin)    was reading through a manual and discovered that  the
350  grn doesn't do overly well at  velocities under 1900 FPS.  and
that the Speer 400 Grn HP would.   Is this true?   I'm looking for
   a deer/bear round. I'm currently  pushing the 350 grn at about 1600
FPS,  If I need to go to the 400 HP,  I would be happy with 1400 FPS.

   Suggestions would be appreciated.
30-30....45/70...... does anything else matter?

The 350 grain Hornady RN was intended for the 458 Win Mag and is a fairly stout bullet.  It likely will punch through most deer and average sized black bears much under 1900 fps.  The 350 grain Hornady FN was developed for the 450 Marlin factory load which will be pushed almost 2100 fps in a 22" barrel.  It was intended to be an all around loading and is adequate for deer, black bear and larger critters.  So, driven under 1900 fps it might not open up much on lighter animals.  The 400 grain Speer is softer with a lighter jacket than the Hornady 350 grain.  It should open up better at lower velocities than the Hornady 350 grain.  You could push the 400 grain Speer 1600 fps, it would work well on deer and black bear and be easy to shoot as well.  If you like lower velocities, any number of cast bullets will work well also.
You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

Snowdog'
I assume you are talking about the newer 1895 GG or CB. You should be able to get 1700 to 1800 fpc without any problems.44grs.4198 will get you in the range of 1788fpc... Useing H322,,,,54 grs gets you about 1852 fpc.
But this is for the newer modles, Allways start low and work your way up so you don't have a mess up. These loads are with 405 grain bullets. hope this helps.  Good luck..............Joe................

I own a Marlin 450 Guidegun, using the Hornady 350gr FN Interlock, on top of 50gr H4198, CCImag primers, Lee factory crimp(heavy) 2180fps. I have used the hornady 350gr fn Interlock, for black bear and German boar hunting, I was successful hunting both using the Hornady 350gr FN, but one thing I did notice, there was no real expansion of the interlock, but it sure had good Penetration on both animals, a good hearty bullet, very tough...In saying this, running them at 1600fps, would be no chance for expansion, unless you hit something very solid, like a shoulder bone, and even at that it may not open up. using the .458 dia, you really don't need much expansion, makes a good hole either way. A good penetrator. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

I am using Serria 300 gr bullet over 55Gr H4198 . The deer I shot last fall  was dead before it hit the ground.

The 45/70 makes a good hole and inside was a huge jello mess. Bit of an over kill, with no meat lost. Do not think I would want a shoulder shot , or hit a ham.
I can not see a black bear walking away from the 45/70 and a 300/350gr. bullet . A 458 bullet in and a 458 hole out.
Happy
