45/70 accuracy
« on: July 05, 2004, 04:02:07 PM »
I got to shoot my new 45/70 barrel yesterday and was suprised how it shot. After 5 rounds to get the simmons 2.5X32 {old scope] sighted the last 7 rounds I shot went into less than 2.5 inches. Ammo was Rem green box 300 gr. Is this typical  accuracy for these barrels?

hvacman, no that is really not typical accuracy for the 45/70 Handi-rifle barrels. They will usually shoot BETTER than that at under 2" at 100 yards with iron sights and even better than that with a scope. Of course you said yours was new so I would expect it to improve after you get 100-200 rounds through it. These guns can shoot, especially in the 45/70 caliber. Keep shooting it and have fun, it will only get better with age and the groups will continue to shrink. Welcome aboard to the 45/70 train and it's good to have you here....<><....

MSP, is that expected <2moa with factory ammo? I've been considering buying the .45-70 handi but all of the shootin I've read here has been with handloads and I don't do that, I would only shoot factory stuff. Whatcha think?    Tim

This was typical of my BC with Soule type peep sights.  That's 100yds and handloaded speer 400gr bullets.

quickdtoo, I believe you will be well served by a Handi in 45-70. Most everyone reports groups of 2" or less at 100 yards with factory ammo and handloads as well. The 45-70 doesn't suffer from poor performance in factory ammo as it once did. Everything you can get from names like Winchester, Remington, Federal and such will be designed around level 1 pressures, 300 grin bulets at 1800 fps or so, 400 grain bullets at 1350 fps or so. But with the availability of loads from Garrett and Buffalo Bore and at least one other soon to be introduced maker, Level two laods are becoming more commonly available. these would be loads driving 400 grain bullets to velocities of 1800 fps or so and 350 grian bullets at nearly 2000. For whitetails and hogs, level 1 loads will serve most any 45-70 owner well. One might want to step up if elk or moose were on the menu, but there is a lot of history that says not so. It would be difficult to go wrong with a 45-70. JP

quickdtoo, Yes those 100 yard 2" groups are with Remington green box. I reload for it also, cheap and easy for this caliber with a Lee Loader, but the Remingtons really shoot well....<><....

It's hard to say on that one.  I know mine was very accurate but it was a replacement barrel too.  First one was horrible.  When I called NEF about it they were suprised, their comment was, "That's our best barrel".  I couldn't say for sure.
