I am going pug hunting this year
« on: June 18, 2004, 09:24:28 PM »
It has been several years since I have been hunting.  I lived in Oregon for 10 years and hunted there ever one of them, after moving down Pismo Beach CA.  I kept going back up to Or. to hunt, but not every year.  Then I got married and found out that it is not true that 2 can live as cheaply as one.  Nor can three, nor four or five.  This year I am going hunting.  I have tried deer hunting in the Sierras, the only problem is that unless you have horses or a friend with a ranch you will find that the hunters outnumber the deer.

So I have decided to go on a guided hog hunt.  I have done some looking on the net and $500 to $800 seems to be the ballpark figure.  Has anyone reading this been on a guided hog hunt in california and have a guide to recommend, or one to warn against?

Second question.  While looking for guides I found two private hunting clubs and was wondering if anyone had any feedback on them.

Club the first.  http://www.goldenramhunting.com/
           Single:    $1,000 initiation + $1,200 Annual Dues
           ( single = you & spouse only)

           Family:    $1,000 initiation + $1,350 Annual Dues
(family = you, spouse, & children under age 21)

Club the second.  http://www.outdoorjournal.com/wuhome/

No prices given, but a member who contacted me was familiar with Golden Ram and said the prices were "About the same".

Thoughts?

Thanks

i  cannot  believe  it  costs  that  much to hunt,  and  especially  to  hunt  hogs  i  know  of  several  ranches  that charge big  bucks   that charge  to  hunt  hogs  i  have  some  cobntacts  where it  costs 50..0  a  day  to  hunt  plenty  of  hogs  no  high  fences  and if  you  go  scent  free  and  can  keep m fairly  quiet   you  will  get  your  pig.  now  trophy  hunting is a  totally  different ballgame. these  are  just  good  eating  hogs

You hunting hogs in Kalifornia?  If so let my in on those contacts if you can.    Most places I have found start at about $500 for a "Hog" hunt and a "Trophy Hog" hunt tends to be higher.  I'll keep looking.

No sir  i  am hunting in East Texas,  i  could  not  afford  to  spend  500  a  hog  and  more  for  a  trophy hog.  If  you ever  get  to  Texas  way  i can  give  you  a  number  that  is  at least 5  times  cheaper  than  what  they ask in california  with  real high  succes rate

My brother is based in Hawaii and is hoping to get into some pig hunting.  He has access to military land and plans on hunting with his remington 870 12 guage with slugs and OO buckshot.  Any suggestions as to strategy for hunting pigs there without dogs and is his choice of firearm OK.  He doesn't have a rifle and hopes to not have to buy one.
I am new to this site so if I am posing this question in the wrong area please forgive me.

Hi hoosierdaddy, welcome to the site. I don't know what the hogs are like in Hawaii, But If they're anything like the Texas variety, I would shy away from the buckshot. The slugs should work fine as long as he can place them accuratly, but I don't think you can get good penetration , especailly on a pig past 20-30 yds. with buckshot. as faras how to hunt them, check the local laws but settiin a stand or blind over bait is hard to beat. also checkout the favorite methods post for ideas; alot of good info there. Good luck.

I was worried about your topic. I have a *pug*. I know you meant pig, it just struck me as being funny. :)

Hello Grendel,

I have heard that those pugs can be very mean and nasty when cornered.  You better take .50 cal BMG, I hear that is the minimum firearm that professional guides recommend...

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I know what you mean about prices in California!  I just moved from Cal 2 years ago.  It is one of the reasons that I was never able to hunt while living and growing up there.  It was just to costly, even for feral pigs.  Now, I live in Texas and am trying to get into hunting.  I have been offered help by a few here on this board to get me going including our esteemed moderatot Howie for which I am very grateful!

Good luck on your search and if all else fails, move to Texas!  We have loved the move.  The people and friends we have met have been great.

Matt

Good news on the flooding!  However, looking out my lab window right now things don't look to promising.  It looks like it is getting ready to dump on us again!  Hopefully it will just pass over and let South east Texas dry out.
