New project - 257 Wby ?'s
« on: June 29, 2004, 02:37:09 AM »
Hello all, I am new to this forum and it appears to be the only place to get good info on single shots, I've never owned one.

I would like to build a longer range gun based on the 257 Wby.  Ideally, I will use something around a 30" tube, no. 5, fluted.  I would like to build it on a single shot frame to keep the overall length down.  I intend to hunt with it, no long match sessions on the bench.  Here are my questions:

1.  What bullet type and weight would everyone suggest?  What would be the best twist rate for that?

2.  What action?  I would love to find an older Browning HW with a burned out barrel...  I heard the made some bad changes in the 80s, what is the serial number cutoff, or do I have bad information?

3.  What is the recommended scope mount system?

4.  Fore-arm reinforcement and barrel stabilization.  I read somewhere (can't remember where) someone building a gun that had a machined aluminum block/rail to support the barrel?  Is this worth exploring.  How else to improve the design of the fore-end of the rifle?

Thanks in advance... great site.

Bullethead the first two things to my mind are
1. Find a Browning in 25/06 and rechamber
2.Get a Ruger #1 and rebarrel or do as in #1 rechamber
The B-78 has very good Browning mounts and rings and Ruger as well has their own (mount and ring) system. Either are fine for the given application. Cheers. POW
