here is a picture of the bullet recovered f rom that boar  i  shot  the other day  it  possesed  a  nice mushroom,  i  did  not  have  a  scale to weigh  this  bullet  but  it looks  pretty  well intact  it  is  a remington core lokt 170 gr  in 30-30

howie.. cant see it   if you post the picture, can you tell me how far the shot was and what angle ?

and  the  picture  from hunt101.com  i  followed  all  isntructions  and  when  I  pull  up  the  post  on  my  pc   it  pops up  anyways  the  shot  was 30  yards slightly quartering towards me  the  ange  was  at me  sitting  on  the  gtround  so  i assume  there  was  no inline  or  decline

Howie did you have to track the pig far ? would you say a 30-30 is suitable for hogs from your experiances or would you rather use "more"  gun ?

This  may fuel  a  small debate, so i will tell  you my opinion.  Personally i love the 30-30 for hogs.  My 2 biggest pigs well  over 300 lbs  were 1 shot stops with remington 170 gr core-lokts.  Now  being honest  i  have  never  shot  through  a  pig  with the 30-30 came close  on a 200 lbe boar but found the bullet  in  the skin  on  the offside rib.  center of mass  shots  in  the  shoulder area  and a little forward   pigs generally  run  no  more thean 50 yards  and  neck  and head shots  or cetain instant death.  The thing with 30-30  is it forces  me  to  pick my shot  watch my distance therefore making me a better hunter for doing so.  matter of  fact  i  am starting  to  go  back  to  my 30-30 more  i  am left handed  so  it  is  awkward  using  a  bolt  gun. Even  when  shooting other calibers  my  shots  are generally  up  and  close  where  i  hunt  the  only  way  you  will  get  a  50  yard  shot  is  on  the  roads  all  of  my  stands  are  within 40 yards  some  i  have  as  close  as 25 yards.  so   a  small  summary  i would  not  hesitate  to  take  a  30-30  hunting  using  bullets  in  the  170  class my  choices  are Remington Core lokts  or partions  hit center  of  the  shoulder  or  neck area  try  not  to  take   a moving  shot  and  you  will  be  ok on hogs

RE:Your rifle. My father just bought my li'l guy the same gun, He too is left handed. Have you experienced any problems with the ejection port on this side?

no problems  ever  with  the  Marlins   the  side ejection is  fine.  the  marlind  are heavier  than  the  winchester  but in my opinion  they are heavier built  guns  a  little  less  sloppy and more positive lock up.  the  accuracy  is   decent  i  have  had  several  that  shoot  better  but  this  gun  was a  gift  from a  friend  only apid 140.00  for  it  so  it  has  some sentimental value to it,  this  rifel  has  lots of hogs to its credit  and never failed me    i  have also  killed  my  biggest  buck  with  it and helped  rid  some coyotes  i  think  you  are making a  good  choice  good  luck
