Asa's Muskrat Super All Call as a woodchuck lure
« on: June 27, 2004, 01:28:29 PM »
Have recently been experimenting using Muskrat  Super All Call on woodchucks with very satisfactory results. Have been using it in situations where I can't get near the burrow and have to resort to live traps and bait. The calling power of Muskrat SAC really shines here, it beats all my other woodchuck lures hands down for catching their attention and pulling them in. I use fresh lettuce for the eye appeal. In use I've varied the settings and have had several traps with the other lures in them and the Lenon's has always produced first and most consistently. I thought I'd pass this on for other folks to use and experiment with....

I'd rather be using it on rats and coon but 'chucks are the order of the day right now.  Has anybody ever used this for Gray Fox? (I know how it works on RdFx  :) )

Thanks again for a great product Asa!! :D

Thanks for the information marshin!  It good to know the lure attracts woodchucks as i've been asked to recommend a  woodchuck lure many times by ADC trappers.   It doesn't surprise me that the Muskrat Super All Call attracks the 'chucks in a big way.  That is one of my most popular lures by the testimonials I received over the years as well as a top selling lure nationwide.   Trappers swear by it as a great lure for 'coon, fox, beaver and mink as well as muskrat.   Mink and fox would go for the sweet, pure muskrat musk and the coon, beaver and woodchuck are probably most attracted by a secret ingredient that is not likely used by any other lure maker. Discovering this "secret" ingredient about 50 years ago was a pure stroke of luck found while experimenting with wild muskrats in captivity.   Thanks again!  Ace

Marshin,
Thanks for the tip. I have some Muskrat Super All Call on hand, and will be trying it on my next woodchuck job. It does have a very unique ( but familiar smell to it ), I even asked the wife to take a whiff once :-)

Asa,
I remember you telling the story previously of how you came upon the secret ingredient....quite interesting. Assuming that your muskrat lure is a combination of rat glands plus the secret ingredient, which as I recall was a 'food-based' item, would you consider testing the secret ingredient alone on woodchucks ? Just curious - there is a good market for woodchuck lures/paste baits, etc. - I've used most that are currently on the market and some work well for me, others not. Who knows, perhaps the rat glands hold some attraction for the chucks as well... I'll let you know my results with the Super All Call after I give it a good try.

As a side note, your state of MI has some real top-notch wildlife control operators, should you ever need any product testers.... I have met several from there that are true professionals.

Regards,
Mike

Mike:
I'm really not interested in testing or developing a woodchuck lure even though there is a good market for such as I have more business than I can comfortably handle already.  I am interested in how you do with the 'rat lure on 'chucks, please let me know after you give it a try. As you say, there are some familiar odors in the Muskrat Super All Call.  If one smells it carefully they will detect the muskrat musk and other known 'rat calling ingredients, none completely overpowering the other.  However, it is  the unique ingredient discovery that when subtly blended along with the other ingredients many years ago that made the lure excell by leaps and bounds and made it a best seller by repeat business year after year.  Muskrat musk is what one would call a universal attractant, like beaver castor, only much better than castor in my opinion so it could very likely hold attraction for woodchucks too.  However, due to the nature of the unique secret ingredient, I can understand why it too would hold a powerful attraction to a number of animal species. It could be a combination of all the odors that calls 'chucks or it may be one solitary ingredient they are after.
