gentlemen -

I am vacillating between a 260 Rem or 6.5 Swede in an Encore 22" from the Custom shop.  Have contacted the Custom Shop and they indicated both chambers to SAMI specs and 1-8 twists.  Any thoughts or words of wisdom.

Can't go wrong with either one. The performance difference between the two is non-existent in the real world. Brass for both is pretty easy to find anymore, overall cartridge length is no issue and so you are still stuck with your dilema. I've had both and currently still have a .260 so that would be my choice.......I already have the dies.

Well, I've never had a .260, but it seems like a great cartridge.  I do have a 6.5X55 and know it's a great cartridge.  Mine's in a bolt gun.  It sure is easy to load for and is quite a pleasure to shoot.  Either one gives you the advantage of great SD 6.5mm bullets, but the Swede has a bunch more history, and might I say class.  To each his own, but I'd choose the Swede...

I have the 260 Remington model 7 and have killed 2 deer and 1 wild boar with this gun.  It is a great caliber and I highly recommend it.  It kicks like a 243 and kills like a 7MM Magnum on medium size game.

I also love my .260 Encore. Mine has the older standard 24" barrel and it's mild and shoots less than 1/2" with some loads. The 2 deer I've taken with it did not go far. If ya want tradition with the Swede I'd get an old Mauser.

Both should do what the other one will, I think the Swede might have a slight edge when loaded to modern pressures. I have several Swede's and a couple of 260's, even an Encore 6.5x55 24 incher. I would go with the Swede just from the nostalgic aspect.

I have a Ruger M77 Compact in .260, and a Winchester M70 Classic Featherweight in 6.5x55, and I prefer the 6.5x55, but only because it has a long action, so I can seat bullets out and they will still feed out of the magazine. The .260 is in a short action, so heavier bullets have to meet magazine length restrictions and take up powder space in the case. In a single shot this will not be a problem, so it's probably a tossup. If you check reloading manuals they are almost identical in velocities. Either will work, but the Swede may have more freebore than the .260, which will necessitate seating the bullets out to be closer to the lands. My M70 had .390" of freebore, and it drove me nuts trying to get it to shoot until I measured it, and started to load to compensate. The Swede was designed for 160 gr bullets, thus the large amount of freebore.
