Two Down...
« on: April 10, 2005, 11:38:25 AM »
This morning we(the wife and I) scored on two nice Jake's(young Tom Turkeys) using our PCP rifles(the wife's Beeman Super 12 .20 and my Rapid 12/250 .25).  Both birds were around 30 +/- yards away.  Yesterday morning the son and I had a Tom talking to us and heading our way when three Coyotes showed up looking for a turkey dinner.  Seeing that we had our sidearm’s with us(a good idea when calling turkeys in bear/lion country) what two of them got gave them a case of terminal indigestion.  Lawdog

Congrats on the successful hunt. Just curious what kind of velocity do you get from these pellet guns? I am guessing using these guns you use head shots? Like I said just curious. Where I live it is a shot gun state only for turkeys so any of this info I could not put to use anyway but I was interested in your posting of this.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

The wife gets around 1,000 fps. using Crow Magnum pellets out of her Super 12 .20 and I get 890+ fps. from my Rapid 12/250 .25.  The wife shot hers in the neck as the tom was looking our way and I took mine with a heart shot(angled in from the back).  Out here in California the taking of turkeys with air rifles is allowed as long as the air rifles is .20 or larger.  For hunting turkeys I wouldn't use one that didn't have at least 750 fps. in .20.  Lawdog

Interesting. Sounds like your both getting on the low end of the 22LR scale as far as Vel goes. Hitting the neck or head with one shot is good shooting as knowing where to shoot for a heart shot as in WI every one concentrates on the head with shotguns so I would not even know where the heart is located on a Turkey. Good shooting. jim
