777 in .45 flintlock?
« on: July 04, 2004, 11:40:21 AM »
I was curious if any of you have experience with 777 in a .45 flintlock?  I read somewhere that the ignition isn't as reliable as regular bp.  I've been using goex 3f, and am happy so far, but a friend of mine is getting out of bp shooting and wants to give me a couple of pounds.  Is it worth the time to work up a new load, or should I just stay with what I'm currently using?

BP subs rarely work reliably in flintlocks...I used Pyrodex for years with percussions and had to switch to Goex when I moved to flintlocks...and I found Goex to be so fast, clean, and accurate that I've rezeroed all my percussions to Goex as well.

You can use BP subs in a "duplex load" configuration...ie: 10-20grns Goex first (to get flintlock ignition) then some amount of 777 poured down on top of it...I used 20 + 50 at the range to use up some leftover Pyrodex, and they were accurate, consistent, etc.

PLease remember that 777 is more powerful than goex or pyrodex.  I believe that you should reduce 15%.

T7 2f ignition is more difficult that a good BP - so in a flint lock if you were going to use it - use it in warm weather you may not get it started in cold weather.  3f on the other hand ignites fairly easy and burns really quick. Still I think in the flintlock BP might be better.  Pay heed to Crow Feather - T7 needs to be reduced by 15% over any other substitute or BP.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....
