Trigger is too light ...
« on: June 26, 2004, 10:21:36 AM »
I just acquired a .22LR NEF Youth Sportster (used). Seems like someone did a trigger job on it 'cause it breaks at 2.5 lb (my SB2 Hornet breaks at 4)

Now 2.5 is not a big deal for me, I like it,  but I bought the gun for my 9 yr old, and I think it might be too light for him... and yet, another part of me says "Hey, why not start him out with a good trigger experience - definitely not the way I started out with a two-stage creepy trigger!"

(He will also be shooting an airgun with a terrible trigger, so he'll get that experience as well!) :?

So I'm looking for some thoughts about this from y'all, and if there is a way to (temporarily) de-lighten the trigger, I'd like to hear about it anyway.

Cheers
Kerry

Trigger pull

the only thing I can think of is you might get a new trigger spring.
Some may have cut the spring to lighten the pull,

Thanks Marv,

and by the way, I have some friends who own about 15 acres near Quemado. I take my airguns out to their cabin when we go there. They started off as anti-gunners (from the city) but after a few minutes of watching us (my wife and I) ventilating Pepsi cans, they wanted to join in.

Every time they invite us out they want us to bring the airguns. Last year had them shooting a Single Six - some trepidation from that, but at least they tried it.

Cheers

tallyho, good for you for introducing those (hopefully former) anti-gun city folk to the fun of shooting. Next time your up there let them shoot that youth Sportster with some .22 CB's or some .22 Aquila Colibris. Quiet, accurate enough for cans at 15-20 yards and FUN. Perhaps they will want to buy a Sportster of their own for camp and you can have some fun with impromptu shooting competitions!!!....<><....

Tallyho, Stay in there with you Friend maybe you can convince
them they need a rattle snake gun. I got out of High school at Quemado many years ago. I was raise about 20 miles south of Pie Town, Marv.

MSP - I used CB's when I let them try the Single Six at the cabin last summer... they weren't very accurate, but they were quiet.

You make a good point about taking the NEF Sportster and quiet ammo.. And I have a Marlin 39 Mountie and my wife has a Henry lever .22 - and I know my friends tend to like to pretend they are Cowboys.. so I'll take the lever guns too! :cb2:

MARV - Haven't yet seen any snakes at the cabin, but if we do, maybe a Snake Gun will be a good suggestion to make to them!! At least it will offer them a 'useful' framework about having a gun in the house.

I'm curious, what caused you to move out of New Mexico? I just moved here a couple of years ago, after practically a life time of wanting to live in the southwest..

The only regret I have is that my kids live with their mother on Vancouver Island - about 1800 miles away - but they are coming here next week for the summer.   :D

Cheers

tallyho, happy to hear your going to have the summer with your children. The CB's (CB longs as opposed to CB Shorts, they are easier to load and work thru most lever actions) are very accurate in rifles. I have over 250 squirrels from head shots between 13 and 22 yards with .22 CB Longs and .22 Colibri Supers out of a Marlin Model 60 with a 4 power scope. I was using an old Remington with Iron sights but the Marlin w/scope closed up the groups some. I got rid of my Single-Six because neither I or my friends could get it to shoot, and between us we have many years of both pistol and rifle team experience. We can shoot other guns but my Single-Six had a mind of it's own when the bullet left the barrel...Try the CB's (Longs) or Colibri Supers in your .22 rifles, especially your Sons new Sportster, I think you will be surpried at under 20 yards....<><....

SINGLE-SIX :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  worse shooting gun i every owned. mine left after a year of trying different ammo, and by the end i was ready to just toss it in the bush, and leave it there. i can kill squirrel any day with my 357mag gp100, but i could not hit a one with that darn little gun, thank god its gone. but i dont feel so bad now, atleast i am not the only one who could not make them shoot.

Good idea with the "snake" gun - maybe the .22 / .410 versapak would fit the bill ...

I didn't think you could own property in Catron county without owning a gun.

At one time the Co. Comm. passed  a mandate all households had to have a firearm.  I don't know any more about it. When I get to be President I am going pass a law that every one in USA own at least one gun. :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  Who will vote for me? :D  :D  :D

IMHO you should teach your son to shoot with the light trigger. I would be tickled pink if every rifle I bought had a 2 1/2 lb. trigger. After all, a single shot is probably the safest rifle on the market.
That is of course if the trigger passes all safety test.
