Lighten Contender Trigger
« on: July 06, 2004, 05:18:22 PM »
I had a trigger job done on one of my Contender frames by Bullberry at around 2.3#.

Later had another done around 1.25# from Virgin Valley per my request.  Like the lighter one much better and cannot help but take it every time I want to go shoot.

I disassembled the trigger assembly from the frame and definitely would not want to mess with the engagement...it looks very small with a very shallow angle.  I assume the only thing left is to change the spring under the lever/catch that grabs the "hammer,"  Yes I realize this is not the hammer but what do you call the incremental arm that sets off the actual hammer.

Can you buy that little spring in a reduced power?  I know where it is from pushing on the catch arm.  Which pin/pins do I have to take out to get to it?  An risk when I remove of difficult reassembly?  I am very careful, but I don't want to hear little parts go springing across the workshop never to be seen again.  I would guess I do not remove the hollow pin but one of the solid ones I see.

Forgive my dumb questions.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

havn't personally used these yet, but i'm told a spring out of a BIC lighter will work as replacement.
i replaced the spring, and little cap along with it, in 2 frames recently. i got these springs from a good friend, so, i can't help you much on finding that exact spring.
it's very easy to take apart, and put back together. you can do it. i can't think of a good way to explain it. maybe someone better at explaining the procedure will drop in. :-)

Yes,  I use the springs from disgarded BIC style lighters.  Usually set my Contender triggers to between a pound and half to pound and three quarter.

Just cut the spring to the length that about matches the one you are replacing.  The finer coils make the difference.

I have used the spring kit from Trapper.  Was always going go try the BIC Lighter Spring trick but the Trapper kit only cost about $5.

My contender trigger was about 4 pounds and I have wanted a lighter trigger for a while and you guys motivated me to do it myself. I read this string about 3 hours ago. Went and bought a Bic lighter. I then decided since I have the spring from the Bic lighter why don't I try cutting some of the coil off the original spring first? So, I cut about 3/4 of the end coil off the original sring on the t/c and put it back in to see what would happen, VOILA!!!!!!!!!!!! My trigger pull is about 1 pound now! I was hoping to get about a 2 pound pull but I will use this for now and see how it goes. I shoot free pistol a lot and my trigger on it (a TOZ-35) is about 4 ounces so I am used to light triggers.  Thanks guys for the thread! I feel great that I was able to lighten it up myself and it took less than 20 minutes to do it! I do wish I had cut maybe half a coil but I do have the Bic spring as a backup and know I can get them from T/C if needed.

:-) Yes, that'll work too. But don't shorten it too much. Keep that bic spring. Krupinski is correct (as usual), the man is a font of knowledge.
