What is the 30 Herret cartridge good for? What brass is it formed from? I can't find it in my reloading books. I have this uncontrollable urge to collect T/C barrels now that i have a frame! These guns are like a reloaders dream come true- you can work up new cartridges for under $200! Thanks- Tad :D

Tad,

The 30 Herrett is a good deer-sized game cartridge.  It was designed to give maximum performance in the T/C from a 10" barrel.  In fact my 10" 30 Herrett with 125 grain bullets gives me identical velocities to my 14" 30-30 Win with the same bullets.  They both run just under 2200 fps in my barrels.

The 30 Herrett is formed from the 30-30 Win case.  Very easy to make brass, just run 30-30 brass through the 30 Herrett sizing die and trim to length.  Or you can buy pre-made brass from Eabco.com for $35.00 per hundred cases.

Reloading data is available in several manuals, especially handgun reloading manuals.

Here is a picture of my Bullberry 30 Herrett:

Does this cartridge use the same .308 bullet as the 30-30? Also Chris, is the manual you are talking about the "One book/One caliber" by Loadbooks? Thanks again- Tad :D

Yes, any .308 diameter bullet will work.

No, NOT any .308 diameter bullet will work!  Most .30 Herretts had 14" twists and they seldom stabilize pointed bullets much over 165 grains - sometimes not over 150s if the bullets are long.  My Super 14 barrel shoots 165 BT bullets okay, but a friend's 10" tube shows oval bullet holes in the paper with the same bullets.

Some custom .30H barrels have steeper twist rates and will stabilize heavier bullets.  But in a 10" barrel the velocities are so low with heavy bullets that their use is moot.  The cartridge was designed for use with 110 and 125-grain bullets, that's why it has the slow twist rate.

[Note that the 170-grain FN .30-30 bullet will stabilize in the Herrett because it is very short for its weight.]

Tad,

like x-caliber stated, they were designed to get maxium performance from 10" barrels.  they are good for all sorts of hunting, varmits up to deer sized game.  i'd guess hogs as well, about anything you'd use a 14" .30-30 on you could use the .30 Herrett.  if you dont have TC Contender reloading manual, you need to get a copy of it.  i dont think they've printed it in a while, so you might have to look around some.  i finally found mine on eBay.  it has reloading data in it for about every caliber that TC has chambered the Contender in...

x-caliber, thats a sweet looking rig there...
:D Howdy... The T/C Manual is available from Midsouth Shooters Supply.. They have the current production.. My 12 inch .30 Herrett barrel is very accurate and pleasant to shoot as well.. With a 125 G Sierra .30-.30 bullet or a 125 G Ballistic tip it makes a dandy deer cartridge.. Cbagman

Bagman, what brand is your 12 inch barrel? It must be custom? Or a cut down 14 inch?  Thanks

.30 Herrett is a fun barrel to shoot...

I picked up a 10" old 30 Herrett with the front site that is soldered on.
It is the old 6 groove barrel. I shoot 125 grn Nosler Ballistic tips with 25 grns of IMR 4198. I have a 4x Redfield on it and for the range it is capable the 4x is plenty. I made 100 cases form my extra 30-30 brass with the cut off die. My neighbor shot it and really doesn't do well with pistols normally. He has decided he wants to deer hunt with it since it doesn't kick the snot out of him like my other pistols.
It is a good all round cartridge and you will enjoy it. Here is some data for 120 to 130 grn bullets. I got this info from a reloading site called Steves Pages.   The link is at the bottom of the page.
