Can someone give me a reason why not to buy a williams 5d peep sight I have heard nothing but good and am about to buy. also would like to hear some testimonials.

I have one on my Marlin 1894S .44mag.

PROS: Light weight, low profile. Allows comfortable one hand "midships" carry. No conflict with buckhorn rear sight when buckhorn is folded down.
Sight picture fast to acquire.

Easy repeatable adjustment both W/E. Once adjusted they stay put. Several sizes of peep inserts.

CONS: Athough profile is low it's squared and blocky. It clashes with the flow of the rifles lines. I learned to live with it. In my opinion it's well worth the price.

B boy that is a pic of the 5d sight i want but i want to tell other people that if they have a 1894 before 1994 don't buy that modle buy the one for the 336 made that mistake once and sent it back with out purchacing the other cause i was not sure it was what I wanted.

I love mine on a 1894 SS 44 mag, but there is one downside. The Lyman is easy to make precise adjustments with, the Williams is not. You have to loosen two screws and guess the amount of adjustment, with the Lyman there is a well-calibrated scale. But once it's set, you're done!
If the $15.00 price difference doesn't bother you, I'd get the Lyman. If you're going to sight it in once and leave it alone forever after, the Williams is clearly the better buy. HTH.

I've used williams receiver sights on several marlin and winchester lever actions and they have performed well above my expections. An easy way to sight in the sight is to use the factory sights to line up the receiver sight then all you have to do is fine tune it. The down side is that the large front bead on the marlins make it a close range sight because the front sight covers too much area at longer ranges (same limitation as with the factory buckhorn sights). But for fast shots in thick cover they can't be beat, and they let you carry the gun easily unlike a scope. Another problem is that in low light they can be hard to see thru but if you take out the small eye piece and use the large hole that it is screwed into you can still make a shot at close range. To gather light get a scope and you can hunt at least 30 minutes longer in the evening and 30 minutes earlier in the morning. Good sight at a good price. Be careful removing the plug screws in the rifle, make sure your screw driver fits well and soaking them with a little oil for a couple of days makes removal easier. Its no fun to get them out if you bugger up the slot.

If you're going to put the site on, site in once with it, and then leave it there the 5D sight will work great for you. If you're going to want to change the sight settings back and forth due to shooting at different ranges or with different loads, then the 5D sight will drive you crazy. As has been said, it's one of those that you just loosed the screws and guess how much to slide the sight. If you want click-adjustable, repeatable settings then you need to get the FP sight from Williams. I have a few of the Williams WGRS and 5D sights on my hunting guns, but on my competitive and "fun" guns I always opt for the FP series.

I prefer the Lyman Peep Sight for the following reasons:

The Lyman sight is sturdier, can go lower in rear hight so you don't have to fool ("Fool proof") with a higher front sight. It works very well with the front sight provided on current Marlin 336's. The click adjustable is very positive.. It is just better then my Williams... which I am selling! If you buy a Willaims, more than likely you'll have to buy a new front sight (higher). I think they knew this when they designed it, since they are pushing the new firesight. The Lyman is far superior! This is with the 30-30 and 35 Rem.

PS A Williams would be OK, if you could mill the edge that could be lower to the top of the receiver, but they figured no one would would figure it out so you can buy a Williams front sight. Go with the Lyman.>---------------------->

I have the 5D and have no complaints. In my oppinion it is well worth the money. As stated earlier by someone else, I adjusted the sight so that I could see the buckhorn and front sight aligned. I removed my buckhorn sight and just needed a slight adjustment to get it perfectly sighted in. The original front sight did not have to be replaced on mine.
