Scope Base Question.
« on: July 07, 2004, 05:43:51 PM »
Can anyone tell me which base would fit a gun from the screw hole measurements?

Let me explain. I had a muzzleloader drilled and tapped for a scope a few years ago. I removed the scope and put iron sights back on it and I lost the scope base. I plan to put the scope back on it and I need to know what base would fit it.

If I provide the measurements from center to center of each screw hole, are there anyone on here who might know what it is?

Or is there a website with this type info listed?

Thanks,

Give it a shot, Thunder.

What are the center-to-center measurements?

BP rifle scope mount base

Thunder,

Is your BP rifle barrel octagonal or round?

From your measurements, I can only guess, but it looks like a Weaver type rail.  The Weaver is the most commonly available scope base system and is copied by many makers.  Also, your gunsmith may have installed a blank Weaver base and drilled whatever hole centers were convenient to his drilling fixture.

Look at your scope rings and see if they are Weaver-type claws.  If they are, take the scope and rings to your local Walmart.  They will have a good assortment of Weaver type bases and you may be able to find a match.

Other than that, I can only suggest that you consider drilling your own blank base to replace the one you lost.

Yes, I know for a fact it was a Weaver base.   He didn't drill a blank.  I was there while he was doing the work.     It is an octagonal barrel.

I'll go to his shop and dig thru the bases and see if I can find one.... he is on vacation this week.

Thanks a ton for your help!

Weaver scope base

GREAT!

Now that you know it was a Weaver base, that narrows it down.

Weaver makes severa general-purpose bases suitable for flat-framed rifles and shotguns, and it may be one of those fitted to your octagonal barrel.  The pre-drilled ones have standard mounting holes, and after putting your measurements on paper, they sure LOOKED familiar, but I didn't recognize the measurements.

That is the easiest fix:  identify the base by matching up the hole centers.  You also need 6-48 screws (Weaver standard) and locktite thread sealant to finish the job.

Good luck!

As usual just give Brownells a call.  I'd guess from your description its a base for the TC Hawken, don't have number right now but the tech line at Brownells should.  Try - 800-741-0015 go to the website and send an email to the tech line.  I don't know for certain but I may have one in stock.  I'll check.  They're a bit pricey but hard to duplicate.  If I remember right the mounting holes in the base are offset towards the right of the base to give that side hammer a little swinging room.  Also that case is fairly long..  If brownells can't help a call or email to weaver most likely will.  Let us know if you have further problems with finding the answer..this is a frustrating thing!!

Thanks for the help, Guys.   I have torn the house apart looking for that base.   I have found a scope I forgot I had.  Several boxes of ammo, gun parts, tools, and my lucky bobcats foot, but no scope base....LOL.

I suppose I should have mentioned this in my previous post, it might help a little.   The scope (Pro Point... Red Dot Thingy) was mounted forward of the hammer so the holes were in the center of the base.   I am planning to put a regular scope on the gun IF I can find one with the correct eye relief.

Thanks again for the help, Guys.   I will take the advice and check on your suggestions tomorrow.

There are intermediate eye relief scopes available but it's cheaper to offset the base a bit and perhaps use offset rings to push the scope back to where it needs to be.  Even with the offset mounts the spur on the hammer will need a tiny little bend t the outside to clear the scope.  The only other problem is the damage to the scope from cap flash.  A bit of duchtape on the scope tube will protect the finish and after the season can be taken off.  Good luck!
