I had a pre WW1 Mauser 98 rechambered to 30-06, and one Chech. 98 from between the wars, rechambered to 30-06. The first one I think had some changes made to the magazine. The second one held the 30-06 length Ok as it was.
I tested another Chech 98 that I have in 8mm. The 30-06 cartridge fits in the magazine just fine. This one I am rechambering in .475x2.5 Belted Mag. It will basicly be a shortened 470 Capstick.
I'm not sure whether to call it the 475 Hud, or 475 Dud.
Any cases cut to 2.5 inches or less, and of any head size up to the rimmed mag cases, or even the 404 Jeff head size might work. The bolt head and action rails need opened up for the larger cases to work.
I would bet that a lot of the new "short mags" would work in a 98 as well as the regular 7mm Mag, the 338 Mag, and the 458 Mag. The 300 Winchester Mag is a tiny bit too long I think. The 308 and 358 Norma Mags would also work. :sniper:
