i just picked up a herters commercial mauser in 7mm rem mag at our local gun show. it looks like it has been fired very little and will make an excellent shooter. it came in a really nice walnut stock. i does look like your right about the commercial mauser though. there werent very many of them on the tables and most of them were priced very good. it only works to our favor though!

I have to ask. If the best accuracy comes from a barrel that has not been cleaned. Why have we not been hearing this from those who go to more trouble for an extra .01" than any others, the benchrest shooters. It seems they clean after every few rounds. During load developement they will clean between groups. Now I do agree that an oiled barrel may not shoot to the same group as a fouled barrel.

They still believe the myth.  Military snipers do not shoot clean barrels.  I got a PM from 20 something of them that were deployed that said they supported my position that a clean barrel just won't shoot.

A well known gun writer said "the first MOA group I ever saw was in 1983."

 When was he born, 1980?

He must have never met my Dad. Pops was shooting sub MOA groups with custom Mausers and Sprinfields he built on milsurp actions in the 60's.

I have his rifles and they shoot just as well today.

Jack O'Connor thought it was remarkable that his #2 Model 70 would shoot a little over 1 MOA which was better than his #1 Model 70.  This level of accuracy was thought to be remarkable in 1959.  An occasional lucky group is not good accuracy.

Guess Jack didn't get out much before 1983, having never seen even "an occasional lucky group."

Couldn't have ever been to a Camp Perry match, that's for sure...

Camp Perry ain't sporting rifles.  Older bolt gun were horrible.  These are the good old days.

Changing the premise of your argument isn't all that helpful.

Regardless, I have a CZ 527 (Mauser action sporter) that shoots MOA out of the box.
