Mag Loads in your in-lines
« on: July 06, 2004, 05:14:50 AM »
how many of you are using mag loads in your inlines?my Knight Rifle likes the 3 pellet load,150gr, with several bullets.i also worked up a triple 7 loose powder load that is outstanding.this load is the one i plan on using from now on because is much cheaper than the pellet load.this load is 130 gr of triple 7 under a 250gr SST.i am getting great accuracy out of this gun with the mag loads

This is Jeff223's post that I accidently moved to a place far, far away.

Jeff223, I apologize for messing up but I did finally get it here.  Once again, I do apologize for the error.

SURVEYOR,

That is a 90 year old picture of my grandfather who came over from Italy a long time ago.  It is a family picture with my father (a baby) lying on a blanket in the center and my Grandmother holding the family dog on the left of the picture.

I wish I could show the whole thing but space prohibits that.  Therefore, not my sheep.

After shooting these things for over 25 years it never fails to amaze me how this magnumitise craze makes the rounds every few years. Now don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with wanting the best performance possible from your firearm. (And advertising a new wonder magnum rifle makes for good marketing for the manufacturers) But I have owned and written about most of the brands and makes of muzzleloading rifles and pistols that have come out during this time period and it may surprise some of you that I have found that the "hottest" load is not always the most accurate load. And in my book accuracy is more important than speed. After all, is that deer any deader if the bullet reaches it in 10 nanoseconds rather than 40 nanoseconds? To my way of thinking it is much more important to be able to place the bullet where I want it to go, in the vital area or kill zone, than that it reach the animal quicker than my neighbors.

I spend just about every weekend at my local shooting range and it has never failed to cause me to shake my head when some of the magnum guys show up to shoot. They promptly load in three or in some cases even four pellets, because they don’t take the time to read the manufacturer’s warnings and if three pellets are ok shouldn’t four be even better, of the propellant of their choice and then blast away at the target. If they can place all of their shots into an 8” circle then they pack up and go home, and wonder why they missed that buck at 125 yards on a day with heavy clouds and a crosswind in excess of 15 mph. It couldn’t be because of the lack of practice or the flinch that some of them develop in response to using such heavy loads could it?

Spending the time to get to know your firearm and developing the load that provides the best possible accuracy can not be stressed enough. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not anti-pellet. I have several muzzleloaders that I use pellets in exclusively. My Austin and Halleck for example shoots it’s best groups with 2 pellets of T7 and my Optima shoots it’s best groups with 3 pellets of Pyrodex. But I don’t use them because they are easier to load or because I am looking for magnum performance, rather I use them because they provide the best accuracy in that firearm using that bullet/sabot combination that I have found so far.

I guess that what I am trying to say is that whether you use the pellets or loose powder, take the time to develop the most accurate load in your muzzleloader and you will enjoy hunting season a lot more because there won’t be any wounded and unrecovered animals that you will have to fret over. And after all isn’t that ethical one shot kill what we all strive for?

I think when posting, you should at least let others know you were loading for the ultmate.  I sure would hate anyone to try 5,  t7's in a knight or Encore.

DEPUTY, what is the kick like with 250 grains of t7? I would feel like I was shooting my old 50BMG.  8)

Magnum loads can be very accurate, but you must enjoy playing around with the rifle to find out what it likes.  I have shot several guns that I could not find an accurate load in over 100 grains.
My old Traditions would push a 250 SST into MOA groups with 135 grains of 777 (max charge).  However I got a flatter trajectory and less recoil with a 195 gr .357 DC so that is what I hunted with (same accuracy).
My new Omega will, so far, shoot a 200 SST into sub-MOA groups with 110 grains 777.  I have not tried it higher yet but will.  It will not shoot the better BC Dead Center bullets worth a hoot yet but I am still playing with it.

My 50 cal Encore loves 100 gr. 2 pellets of t7, I tried 3 and my accuracy was not good. I also did a lot with the powder t7 and it shot good with 110 gr. of t7. I just stuck with the 2 pellets of t7 for hunting, and for quickness of reloading. But I have not needed the 2nd shot yet. :)

I worked up in 5gr steps from 90 gr loose T7 3f in the TC super XR.45, 120 was more accurate than anything above or below it, so that's where I left it. I don't think you can expect much better than moa for a muzzle loader at its best! Since this load is approaching max, I was glad it worked out.

I use 150 grains (3-50gr pellets of Pyrodex) with 348 gr Powerbelt in my Encore.  Unlike most of you, I often run into dangerous game while hunting.  When I run into an irrate Bull Moose or Grizzly I want all the penetration and energy (stopping power) I can get.  I don't feel this is being Macho, or over zealous, just cautious.

I just got some 440gr, Flat Nose, solid lead bullets.  I am going to try and work up a load, using these.

Sourdough, I would do the same thing. Here in Delaware the only thing dangerous are the mosquitoes and ticks. :)  But for deer here 100 gr. is plenty.
