Please post a pic of your O-ring
« on: March 13, 2005, 08:09:11 AM »
Can somebody please post a pic of their handi O-ring?  I've done quite a bit of searching and have not come accross a single picture of one.  There have been a few requests, but no pics.

So, can somebody please show the rest of us exactly what your O-ring looks like?  Also, feel free to add a description of what it's made from, and how well it works.

Thank you.  I'm sure there are LOTS of folks who will thank you besides me.  Maybe this could become a sticky or a link to FAQ.

:D , Hey Stiff Neck, give me a day or so and I'll drop a couple of "O" rings and another option, a flat rubber washer, in the mail to you. You will have them by the end of the week. And at the risk of sounding like a wise guy ( ) it looks like this,........O.......<><...

Please forgive me :-D , I could not resist!!!!

stiff neck,
You can get all the info you need on O-rings from Parker on a Google Search.  However, just going to your local hardware store or Home Depot and searching through the plumbing supplies you should be able to come up with an o-ring that will suit your needs.  Good Luck!

Here's a pic of a 9/16"OD x 3/8" ID x 3/32" thick "O" Ring in place on the barrel stud.

Wow, thanks!  Looks simple.  I've heard of using anything from rubber O-rings, to rubber car mats, to milk jugs, to flat washers, to a plastic garbage can.   8)

Accuracy Tips
« Reply #6 on: March 13, 2005, 11:51:48 AM »
After reading this post I just spent a couple minutes and made/installed an O-ring for my Handi 223.  I’ve been trying to squeeze out as much accuracy as possible (using simple things like this) and this seems is as simple as it gets.  The good thing about the O-ring is if it doesn’t work there’s no real loss, just remove it and throw it away.  Before I installed the O-ring I checked and found that a $ bill would slide freely between the barrel and forearm in between the screw and receiver but in wouldn’t in between the screw and end of the forearm.  After installing the O-ring it slides freely in both places.  I am assuming that’s the objective of the O-ring.

Anyway, I also wanted to report out on the accuracy improvements that I’ve had by using some of the simple tips that I read on this forum.  When I first got my Handi (used but like new) I couldn’t get it to shoot any better than about 1.5  to 2 inches at 100 yards (neither could my friend, the previous owner).  First, I spent some time and found out what ammo it likes (tip 1).  It likes the Federal American Eagle 50 gr. JHP the best with the Winchester 45 gr. JHP following close behind.  Second, I found out that it doesn’t like to rest on the forearm (tip 2) and so now I rest it on or as close to the receiver as possible.  Third, I found out that you need a good way to stabilize the rifle stock at the rear (tip 3).  I haven’t purchased a good rear bag yet (any recommendations?) but I’ve been sand bagging it the best I can.  Fourth, I found out that the Handi’s like to have follow through when pulling the trigger (tip 4).  After trying these tips I am able to get my groups to stay within a 1 inch square at 100 yards.  Relatively speaking that’s a great improvement (and shooting for me) and I owe it all to those tips.

My friend, the previous owner, is kicking himself in the butt now after I’ve reported to him how the thing has been grouping lately.  One of the reasons he sold it to me was he couldn’t get it to group any better than 2 MOA at 100 yards.  I got a good deal on it and I bought it strictly for coyote hunting where my shots would be at 100 yards or less.  I figured 2 MOA accuracy would get a round in the kill zone at that range but I also knew that I would want it better.

Speaking of better, there’s at least one more tip that I’ve heard on this forum that I haven’t tried yet.  It’s lightening the trigger pull.  I plan on having the factory do it when I send the receiver back for another barrel once I am done using it this season.  I am not sure I want to tackle that task myself so I thought I’d just let the factory do it.

I look forward to squeezing the most accuracy as I can out of this gun (within reason) while having a heck of a lot of fun doing it.  If there’s any other simple tips that I’ve missed please chime in and let me know them.

Thanks to all.

I originally felt the same way about having the factory do a trigger job vs me doing it, but after doing the first one and learning how easy it is, it's no big deal at all with Perko's and Raynor's trigger job instructions. I've done several now, and it's a piece of cake. If you don't have the tools, it will cost a you a few bucks to do it, but I had all the tools which are basic stuff and most you probably already have if you do much DIY stuff at home. My trigger jobs are a bit lighter than those the factory has done and it doesn't take much to get them than way. The hardest part is the reassembly, but knowing a few tips really help, Fred M has a couple tips on his web site that help also.  If you decide you want to tackle it yourself, just holler, lots of us have done em...

When I sent my receiver back for the .223 bull barrel and put a note in the box asking them to adjust my trigger pull to 2.5 lbs....that's what I got, smooth and sweet.  Friend of mine has shot my handi a few times and just cannot get over how great the trigger is....
I had tried the washer on my 06 barrel with good results.  When I got the .223 it just wasn't working as good as I though it should, I relieved the front stock a little and glass bedded it with 2 layers of electrical tape.  Added the washer and now with 52 grain boattails from Wisconsin cartridge that a die hard prairie dog shooter gave me, I get cloverleafs.  Had tried the Winchester 45 grain and its not as good.  Will have to order more from WC.  By the way, their prices are lower than the 40 pack.

WC doesn't sell 52gr anything in 223 Rem.  I just ordered from them two days ago, all they offer is 55gr V-max, 55gr SP, and 55gr FMJ.

Ok lost Okie, as quick said, the prices are pretty good, a great way to get brass also. I will have to work something out with friends in neighboring states though, since this liberal bastion of Massachusetts will not allow me to buy ammo through the mail!!! Or components either for that matter, not even round balls for my muzzleloaders, as if I am going to hold up a bank or start an uprising with a single shot, black powder, side hammer, replica of Davy Crocketts squirrel gun!!! Oh sure, they have our best interests at heart,  NOT,  our liberal, socialist, democrat, Attorney General will do anything to outlaw guns or anything to do with them!!!

 , Sorry guys,  I got carried away....

Back to the point, Lost Okie, now that you have our curiosity peaked with that reference to WC ammo, which bullet/ammo do you have if it's not a 52 grain boat tail? As Stiff Neck said they don't offer that, I checked and in .223 they offer only a 55 grain Barnes, PSP or FMJ loading, please advise which gave you the good accuracy...Thanks....<><....

Handi Trigger Jobs

Thanks Quickdtoo but when it comes to doing stuff like that it seems like I have nothing but bad luck.  I am a mechanical engineer by trade and can understand how mechanical things like the trigger mechanisms are supposed to work but when it comes to actually working on them I am all thumbs.  I can use my brain to design and engineer things but my hands sometimes don't seem like they're connected to my brain.  Some people are born with the innate ability to do both but I wasn't one of them.

Besides, I am going to be sending my frame in to get an accessory barrel and the factory does the trigger jobs for a fairly reasonable price.  I'll have them do it so I don't have to worry about flubbing it up.

Thanks again, I appreciate the offer though.

Getom59, I hear ya, that ability is called mechanical dexterity and working on the trigger does require that for the reassembly. Getting a trigger job when having a barrel fitted is a no brainer and an excellent idea for anyone, I'm holding off doing my BC frame because I'm planning on sending it in for a 45-70 barrel once I get the 45-120 barrel shooting good. It's got a fairly good 3lb-15oz trigger on it now, but while it's there, I'll see if they actually charge the $20 for an under 5lb to 3lb trigger as has been stated here by someone in the past.

TM7, when that happens on a barrel of mine, I sand the spacer just a bit or put a spacer that's slightly thinner on the forend. If you only have one barrel that fits that frame, you can remove the forend spacer and flat sand the surface that fits against the forend to remove just a little plastic. It doesn't take much so go slow. Keep in mind that if the O ring doesn't help accuracy, you'll probably need to place shim material between the spacer and forend to achieve the original fit....or buy a new spacer from Brownell's for a few bucks.....

Hmm... I must have special rifles. Of course my .223 has an Ultra barrel on it, but I rest my rifles using a Harris bipod, and attach it to the front swivel stud.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Attn: Stiff Neck, I got to the hardware store AND the post office today. I sent you out 3 different diameter "O" rings,  try each one to see which will just barely free float you barrel without having to really tighten the forearm screw to much. The middle diameter worked best for me on my new Sportster but the dimensions of each gun ( especially the forearm) can vary slightly. I have also included a flat rubber washer, try them all to see which may work best for you, perhaps none on one gun and 1 or 2 may work on another. It's a trial process to see what may help each gun. Just remove the forearm, place the "O" ring over the forearm stud next to the barrel and reattach the forearm using firm but not real heavy pressure on the screwdriver, you will soon see the thick "O" ring may leave too much space between the forearm tip and the barrel (in the barrel channel) and the thinnest one may not free float the barrel, perhaps the middle thickness will work best, just try them all to see which one works best then shoot for effect. Let us know how it works out...Good Luck....<><....

Okay. Now you've all got me started.Bought the heavy .223 some years ago, then the 45/70 barrel + lightened trigger.Played with them for a while, but they've been sitting.Except for the occasional groundhog out back, when the .223 comes out.(evn went thru the AR .223 stage-hell of a switch from the Handi) .Anyway, reading these posts th last couple weeks got me going agian.Picked up some O rings today, now to hit the range. Thanks to all,Dave

:D , Welcome aboard DaveP and good luck, let us know how things work out. Are you shooting the Winchester white box 45 grain hollow point value pack ammo? It's about $13-$14 for a 40 round box from Wal Mart and shoots great out of these Handi's!!! Don't even fool around with Military or Wolf ammo for accuracy....<><....
