Contender 444Marlin loads?
« on: July 11, 2004, 11:47:19 AM »
I have a contender pistol 10 inch, I shoot 444Marlins out of it. My question is. Will the frame  hold up to factory loads and near max reloads? I am about 3 gr. from max load. I loaded a lot of rounds for my 444 Marlin rifle, but I sold the rifle and still have the rounds I loaded up. I have shot about 70 of these rounds and everything looks good. I still have about 50 reloaded rounds left. Before I start reloading them again I want to make sure I don't over stress the frame. Now if it were an Encore I would be working closer to the max load.

Thanks.

Redhawk, I think you will be fine.  That 444 case is very stout.  I would suggest making sure there is no lub on the cases and the chamber is free of any oil, grease or lub.  I have some wooded q-tips that I swab the chambers with acetone to remove any of this.  From what I have heard the 444 case is so strong it will compensate for excessive pressures.  You just need to do you part and make sure the chamber is clean and dry, to reduce rearward thrust.

I'm sure someone else will chime in.  Good luck, jh

Jhenkle, I've seen where you've mentioned using acetone for a degreaser a couple of times. I worked in the fiberglass boat business(hands on) for 14 yrs.. Acetone isn't a good degreaser. Laquor thinner is much better. I know some will disagree, but I've earned a lot of my living (until retirement) using it daily.  Pat

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.  Acetone cuts RCBS case lub very well, but not Imperial.  May be the thinner will cut both.  Thanks again, I hate handling the acetone anyway.....   jh
