Rolling Block Barrel Threads ?
« on: July 15, 2004, 03:29:10 AM »
I thought I'd lucked into a good deal on a Rolling Block Action For BPCR. The markings show 1882 from Oviedo Spain. The threads are 14 threads per inch standard "V" as far as I can tell, And the 2 barrels I've aquired both have square threads. Does anyone know if the Spanish rolling block used "V" threads, or did this one get cut for a Martinni barrel ? The action does seem smaller than 1 barrel would indicate (Danish 43), Major diameter is right at 1.1 inch for the threads. Thanks

Jonscheuler,

All Remington-produced military rolling block barrels were 12-tpi square threads, but they came in two standard diameters, the smaller one for blackpowder (No. 1) actions, and the larger one for smokeless (No. 5) rifle and shotgun actions.

The Danish and Swedish actions I've rebarreled were standard blackpowder 12-tps square threads.  I have a Spanish Oviedo rifle, ut have not removed the barrel to see if it is standard square threads.

I suspect that the martini shank and threads are too small for an Oviedo action to be recut for it.

Now you have me highly curious.  Can you post some digital pictures?

Jonscheuler.

After thinking about it, I realized that it made no sense for an Oviedo military rolling block action to be cut for vee threads.  The licensed producers of the Remington Rolling Block (Spain, Argentina, Denmark, Sweden, Norway) copied the Remington design faithfully, and with all other action parts there was a large degree of parts interchangeability.  US military thinking at th time (and the RRB was designed for the military market) favored the square threads for a more secure barrel attachment.

The 1882 date on your Oviedo indicates that the original patents were still in effect.  US patents then were good for 17 years, I believe.

The Spanish Oviedo military action is a direct copy of the Remington Number 1 blackpowder action.  It should be the same size as the RRB.  Differences include cross screw forearm attachment, soldered on rear sight, and longer barrel.

Let us know how you make out on this project!

Thanks guys, that's what I kinda figured. But the "V" threads are easier to cut anyway. Again - thanks
