Noise reduction
« on: January 01, 2004, 07:29:01 AM »
I've found that it might be helpful to have a somewhat "quiet" gun. My Winchester 1K is kinda loud. I noticed that Air Arms' Pro-Sport & -Elites have noise dampers incorporated into the barrels. Do those devices really work, or are they mostly just theoretical? Would either of these two rifles be quieter than my Winchester?

Thanks.

i have the 1k too..i think this gun is mostly very loud because of the spring snapping back..theres nothing you can do about that, but anyone care to shed some light on the whole noise dampener?

Actually, theres is something you can do about the noise, but its not worth doing it to one of those cheapo Winchester guns. It would cost more to solve the problem than the gun is worth.
Yes they do work, yes they are a lot quieter than the Winchester, and building one for your rifle would certainly be illegal. Just possession or manufacture of the parts to build one is illegal, regardless of its intended use on an airgun.

No, no ... No intention to attach a silencer to the Winchester. I meant that I'd save up my pennies and purchase one of the Air Arms rifles if they were significantly quieter. Apparently, they are, right?

Which brings up another point .... Does the US ban on silencers extend to the built-in ones on the Sport or Elite? That is ... are those two rifles legal in the US?

Well Doc, thats kind of a legal grey area. They are allowed because the are mostly constructed as an integral part of the barrel. It seems that ATF has no interest in noise reduction devices as they pertain to airguns, since they aren't classified by them as firearms. Or if they do, they don't care and have bigger problems to worry about than some guys playing with "toy guns".
Some of those guns make no more noise than the sound of the hammer falling. I think you will find that going from a Winchester 1000 to a Pro Elite is like selling your Yugo and buying a Mercedes.

Pro elites aren't readily available any more.

Its my understanding that the Pro Elites aren't being imported any more - or at least the dealer I work with can't get them.  But I see used ones for sale regularly on the American Air Guns Classified ads site.

On another note, some other air gun sites are very picky about discussing "moderators" for fear of ATF cluing in. Some places basically forbid it to be discussed.  Please use discression here.

The Air Arms Pro Elite, Pro Sport and TX200 are still available, check out Pyramid Air, Compasseco, and Airguns of Arizona. The ProSport is the one with the integrated moderator.  Theres nothing wrong with talking about what gun is sold with what accessories, and if they work as they are said to. These guns are perfectly legal. Its building and attaching the do-it-yourself-at-home things that shouldn't be discussed.

"The ProSport is the one with the integrated moderator"

So does the full-sized TX-200 and Pro Elite.  All three have a "baffled" barrel to help suppress the report.  To what extent they WORK is another issue.  A good tune WILL help decrease the noise of any spring air rifle.  Combine a good tune with one of the baffled barrels and I think it helps somewhat.

The Pro-Elite is not made any longer, unfortunly a bad seller.

I use a TX Mk III and theise air rifles are excellent.

Compared to my 11 ft/lbs FWB Sport the shrouded 15 ft/lbs TX is almost totaly quiet (same calibre).

If I understand things correct, the "Winchester 1000" is some kind of Hatsan under a US label (=Crap)?

Looks like a kind of big step to take, moving from the bottom to the absolute elite.

I reckon the TX/PS is the very best springers ever made.

I dont know your silencer laws but i do know they work. Im a big fan of logun (as you may have worked out from other posts) And their silencers are considered amongst the best. I shoot mainly precharge rifles and the difference between having a silencer fitted and not, is huge. Air arms are also a reputable firm and theyre stuff does what it says! On a springer you will always hear the spring snap back but the muzzle report will be reduced by around 75% or more with a good silencer. Some springers can be fitted with gas ram conversions which reduce both noise and recoil. Air arms make a number of these mod kits.

air gun suppressors

A person's location makes all the difference. As it is against federal law to violate state law, what may be legal in one area won't be in another. As to federal law, air guns are not firearms, so integral suppressors aren't restricted. What the interpertation of the issue becomes in a  state that classifies airguns as firearms, is no doubt a can of worms which may not have been opened completely by the courts, and therefore an unwelcome issue to some discussion forums. But the bottom line is: they work!
