I spotted a .17 at my local gun shop. New in the box for $149. Is that the going price? He also had a used one with a Simmons 3-9X40 for the same price. The new one sounds better to me. I'm not sure why the used one was sold already, and would be afraid there might have been a problem with it. I'm not too crazy about that Simmons scope either. I did see a .17 specific scope at Cabelas, have any of you tried one of those. I'm going in the morning to put a deposit on the new rifle, and should pick it up next week.

The boys at RFC really like the BSA Sweet 17 scopes and BSA apparently has excellent customer service. I've got a air rifle scope on my 377, it is an excellent buy for the $90 I paid for it. Lawdog highly recommends some of the BSAs, he has a bunch of em!

BB u should look at www.grafs.com They have very good price on there Sweet 17 scopes .  i put one on my 17 but haven`t had time to get to the range yet Rich

Dropped off a deposit this morning. That BSA Sweet 17 sounds like a winner. From what I'm reading here, the .17 is good to about 150 yards? If so, that 4-12x should do the trick.

Well, I though that at first, too! But after my first day out hunting and killing a ground squirrel at 158yds, it looked mighty small at 12x. If it had been in a hole which a lot of times they are and you can only see their head, I decided I wanted more power. I've got 3 17hmrs with 4-16x, 6-20x and 8.5-25x scopes on em. You don't need to use all the power all the time, but if you need it, it's nice for it to be there.    Tim

They are going for $150. to $180. in my area. The seventeen that is. If you are lucky enough to find one.
Last fall I looked for two weeks in three cities before I finally found one.By that time I was willing to pay a little more than $150. I don`t regret it though. It has been a blast to shoot.

When I first saw it last week, at my local dealer, he had the one NIB and the one used w/Simmons scope your choice for $149. When I went back to drop a deposit on one, the used one was gone, and he had three NIB. I tried the trigger on all three, and they where very similar, but I think I picked the best.

Good Luck BB, I am sure you will fall in love with it as the rest of us have. They are very accurate and easy to shoot, just relax and do your job and the gun will do it's job. Mine shoots Hornady ammo the best...I think most NEF's do....<><.... :grin:
(I have only been able to shoot the 17 grain bullets so far, unable to get any of the new 20 grain bullets yet. I think the heavier 20 grain bullets  should be much better for varmits bigger than gophers and such (coyotes!!!)

  Thanks! I sure am looking forward to it, as I do every new rifle. :)  I'll be ordering my new .308 when I pick this rifle up. I'm definitely getting the Ultra, I think? Too many choices Handi, Ultra, Survivor, how's a guy to pick?

Midway and Midsouth have the 20gr XTP in stock now and Natchez has CCI 20gr GamePoint in stock, FWIW....There's a field report on the XTP at RFC and a CCI penetration test at Predatormasters....tim

  Thanks for the links! I've heard that the 17 gr. .17 ammo was hard to get when it first hit the market, now it's everywhere you look. I imagine it will be the same for the 20 gr.  I reload for every gun I have except for the rimfires, and this is a nice break. Don't get me wrong, I love reloading, but It's like I don't have to think too hard on it, just have fun shooting it. I've been looking locally for a bore snake for the .17, but no luck so far. Looks like I'll be forced to spend a bit of time at Cabellas over the weekend. Well, if I have to, I have to.

As a matter of fact, I don't know if you have seen a Patchworm, but they are nifty and cost way less, work better as far as I'm concerned, ya might think about them as well.    tim

I picked it up last night! When I got it home, I mounted a 3-9x40 scope I had kickin' around, and started to sight it in. It started raining, but I had it close. Tonight a ground hog showed it's snout, and bought the farm. Dropped him at a short 50 yards. It is a sweet shooter, and will be even better when I finish sighting it proper, and get something to clean it with. I've been shooting it as is from the box.

After you get it broke in, don't clean it! It seems to be the most accepted practice to not clean it until the accuracy starts to drop off, which could be anywhere from 50-500 shots! If I clean, it takes 20-30 shots to get it back to hit POA and have good groups.  Tim

Tim,
  I've really shifted my opinion on cleaning of rifles lately. I used to clean them after every shooting, but I think I was doing more harm than good. I have been using 40 gr. moly coated bullets in my .223 Ultra, and the moly bullets don,t shoot well at all until it gets to build it up a bit.  Most of my other rifles just get cleaned when accuracy drops off.

I've been using the Varmint Al method of break in, using JB Bore compound or Flitz to polish and smooth the bore first before I even shoot it. Has worked out very well and particularily on the centerfires, has save me a lot of shooting and cleaning and shooting and cleaning doing the usual break in. My first day out with the .223 UV, I shot .265 and .440, 3 shot, 100yd groups. I didn't use this method with my .17hmrs, wish I had, it would have saved me some money on ammo, but it was fun!
