Spanish 1916 mauser sporter what should i do with it
« on: December 17, 2004, 12:38:58 PM »
I just got a spanish 1916 mauser in 7x57 off a friend for a favor, now i dont know what to actually do withthe rifle.
I see i can prob rebarrel it to257 roberts but what other calibers will run in this actoin safly?
Ive been trying to find out more about it but there isnt much there was the 1893 i think and the 1896 and then the 1916 modle and the 1916 modle is better since there is 3 lugs so i figured i would make a nice rfle out of this sporteized rifle

someone has drilled and tapped the reciever and milled off the stripper clip raisd area to accept the rear base i have removed the front sight and the rear top parts and was thinking a scout rifle but im unsure what to do

this will be a winter project ad the synthetic stock has to go

anyone with info please let me know and what is a safe rebarrel caliber
i might just stay with the 7x57 its proven itself

Thanks chris 8)

If the bore is in good shape I would keep it 7x57 that is a great caliber and a lot of guys who buy the spanish rifles wish they had them with good bores! Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Don't under estimate the 7mm round.  I started picking up some 7's years ago.  Its right there with the swede mauser in accuracy and past the 30-30/303 and very close to the 308/30-06 in power its right in the hunt with with all of them.  You also have a wide range of bullets in reloading for it too from varmit up to big game rounds.  The 7x57 has killed elephants too in africa.  And the low recoil sure gets my vote too.  Its a pleasure to shoot just like the swede mauser.  I'd stay with the 7mm  I have one spanish mauser dated 1926 still in 7mm.  I believe most we changed over to 308 too so finding a 7mm maybe rare.          BigBill

Heck as long as it is drilled and tapped any good gunsmith or gun shop can match up bases for you I would scope it. Lots of cheap milsurps out there like the Mosin 44's and the cheap mausers that you could make scout rifles out of that are not drilled and tapped. You can get a Mosin 44 for 70 bucks and under and a scout mount from CDNN cost 13 bucks and it is a good one plus they have pistol scopes for around 30 bucks. For a 100 bucks you could have your scout rifle and still have your scoped 7MM

Most gunsmiths charge around 20 bucks a hole now 4 holes thats 80 bucks so yours already done is a bonus for you.

S&K make quick fitting scout mounts for Mausers and many other mil surp rifles. Here's a link to their site:

Click on the Insta-Mounts button and check them out from there.

If it has two holes in the front mount just give me the distance between the holes on the front mount.  It should have one hole in the rear near the bolt handle on the rear mount.  Its either a weaver mount or a redfield.  I think the weaver is more popular.  Thats the two holes in the front and one in the rear.  I use the see thru mounts from Samco while there for a large ring I just change the front mount to a small ring and everything still fits.  They only cost $16 and they clear the orginal  bent bolt ok too.                                                    BigBill

I was looking at the ballistic caculator and putting in the 7mm .284" diameter and my 150gr bullet  using a 125yd zero runs an 3/4" path the whole distance.  Thats pretty impressive accuracy.

scope bases
« Reply #7 on: December 20, 2004, 09:50:52 AM »
well i bought a set of 2 piece rem 700 bases today and they dont fit , well the front does fine but the rear by the bolt has 2 holes there too , and the spacing was so close but it wouldnt line up with the 2nd hole in the base i can just see the edge of the hole so does the redfield base have 2 holes in the rear??
and another thing the screws that came with the rem bases screw in the holes but they wont tighted very good they are alittle smaller than the hole
the screws have to be alittle wider they grab but they wont tighten there the wrong size ??
Im looking at a oversze screws now huh  :(  im going to have to have them redrilled and then tapped and im going to have to find a base to fit the rear 2 holes there are 4 total

let e know if anything sound familiar to anyone

Scope screws come in several different sizes. 6/48 is standard for weaver stuff but other sizes are used. Your local gun shop should have a box of screws take the gun there and see what size fits. They can help you with the scope bases also. If not a good gun smith can and the charge  to look at it would be minimal of not nothing. Jim

Just for grins, set the bases and rings on...check to see if bolt handle has been altered to facilitate scope mounting (also safety). If the screws you are trying to use are 6X48, Brownells sells a slightly oversized screw and tap, don't have to redrill bases that way, 8X40 are the next step up.
If the bore of this gun is ok, might make a good project gun, slow down, identify the steps (and $) to put gun back in service and settle down to a nice winter of research and developement.

Yikes.  Must be local rate variation or something.  The smith I use charges $8 per hole with all the other shops around here charging $10-12 per hole.

As to rebarreling options.  AFAIK the 3 main options you have are 7x57, 6.5x55, and 257 Roberts.  All three are good rounds.  I've already got a Swede m96 Sporter in 6.5x55 and will be rebarreling a Turk Mauser to 257 Roberts in the next 2 or 3 months.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....stay with the 7mm.

Or better still have the chamber reamed for 7x57 Ackley Improved and get .280 Rem performance from your rifle.
It takes a little more powder, burns it much more efficiently, puts little more pressure on the bolt face for the extra power & practicaly eliminates case neck stretching.
You simply fire-form the cases from standard 7x57 rounds, no mucking with re-necking or the like.
It also means you can use standard 7x57 ammo reasonably accurately if you're caught in a jam and run out of re-loads.

Consider your self lucky as 8 bucks is darn cheap expecially if they have to drill and tap a extra hard reciever. My smith used to charge cheaper but goes by what the standardized rate is. There is a list of what most smiths charge per job or hour.
