Hi,
I bought a Marlin Cowboy .38-55 last year and was a litttle suprised at the cost of cartridges (Buffalo Bore are $47 per box, the Winchester are cheaper but anemic).

I wanted to get into reloading anyway so this gives me an excuse.

I've been doing some reseach and it seems that the Lee Precision Anniversary kit is the way to go given my budget. I don't like the Lee dies because it only opens up the end to accept a .375 calliber bullet (they are the same dies as the .375 - cost saving measure by Lee Precision) and I want to use .377 or .379 which are closer to the bore of the .38-55 (am I wrong here?).

Anyway, question is: Will the Lee press accept Lyman dies which are made specifically for the .38-55?

The lee press is threadedthe same as the other dies,7/8"x 14tpi.There is NO reason not to use the proper die for the cartridge.

It's better than that.  All of the modern presses take all of the modern dies.  It's that standardized now.  The same is true of shell holders; Lyman, RCBS, Redding, and Lee all have their designs and part numbers, but all of them will fit each of the presses.  

This changes when you get to separate priming operations, with properitary designs still common (esp. Lee, their primier shell holders are specific to that), and with trimmers.  It's the presses and dies that are standardized now.  

Now watch somebody post the one exception!

Because of the large variation in bullet diameter you should take a chamber casting with about an inch of the bore with a product called cerrosafe, it is easy to use yourself. This will give you the correct dimention of your bore so you can get the right reloading stuff needed.

Ditto what Donna said, and Cerrosafe is available through Brownells, along with instructions for it's use.
