Boyd stocks for Encore
« on: June 13, 2004, 11:35:00 AM »
I got a Boyd's laminated stock set for my Encore a while back.  The recoil does not make shooting it a pleasant experience.  I thought that the Boyd stock was supposed to be identical to the Encore wood stock.  Went to a sporting goods store and they said that in the Sims recoil pad one size fit both synthetic and wood Encores.  I said not and so they went and got an Encore and sure enough it was the same shape/size as the synthetic.  I know that the Boyds is wider than the Encores that I saw there. Sooo, what gives?  Did Thompson change something this year?  Or do I have to get a grind down pad to fit the Boyds stock?

I have a boyd's laminate stock that I fitted with a pachmeyer decelerator.  The Boyd's stock definitely seemed beefier than my factory stock, so it never occured to me that a prefit pad would work.

Sims makes two pads for the Encore stocks.  The 10031 fits synthetic stocks and the 10030 fits wood stocks.  By way of conversation with the folks at Boyd's, I was told that the Sims pad that is made for the factory wood  set would fit their laminated wood set.  That was my plan for my soon to come 209 x 50 barrel. That is, buy a set of Boyd's laminated stocks and put a pre fit Sims pad on them.

I'm not saying that this is definately correct, I'm only stating what I was told by the Boyd's people.  I think they understood what I was asking.
I have heard their stocks described as "beefier" by others, but I took that to mean through the grip area, not the width or heigth of the butt stock.

This is what I was told also.  That the Sims 10030 was for the Encore factory stock as well as the Boyds.  So I don't understand how the Encore stocks I was shown (in wood) fit exactly with the Sims 10031 recoil pad.  I know they fit because the store guy put the Sims 10031 up against the butt of the Encore and it was an exact fit.  I would just order the Sims, but it is a hassel if it does not fit.  And I do not have any stores within 100 miles that stock the 10030 recoil pad.  My Boyds stock does not have near the taper that the factory Encore does.  If you decide to go with it let me know, if you would, how it fit and what the measurements were.  I would sure appreciate it.

I just put a Sims pad on my Boyds laminated stock. I used Sims Small #10541 Grind to Fit recoil pad. I got it from Bass Pro Shops (89685701) for $24.99. I just put my belt sander in a vise & went slow, it was actually pretty easy. A huge improvement over the Boyds recoil pad.

I just pulled the recoil pad off my Boyd's set and will be taking the old Boyd's pad into Sportsmans Warehouse this weekend to see what matchs up. With this thread, at least I have a couple to look at first.

Thanks,

Joe

The 10031 did not match up to the boyds pad at all. I found a template for the 10030 at the following link and it looks like it may not fit either. The Warehouse did not have a 10030 in stock for me to try, so who knows there.

It looks as though the best way to go is get a "grind to fit" and then find someone with a belt sander.  You would think that Boyds would put a better recoil pad on their stocks. :o

No HarryD, the Boyds forend will not work with hanger bars.  They work on factory barrels only.  In fact, my Bodys forend did not even come with forend screws, I had to order them seperately.

I spoke with a different person at Boyd's today.  He physically measured a stock butt for me.  It was 5 1/4 x 1 9/16.  This is slightly different than the template for the #10030 prefit Sims pad which is 5 x 1 5/8.  He said a grind to fit is the way to go on this stock.  Oh well, so much for the easy way.
