What are your favorite mags for 1911? I have a Colt Gold Cup Trophy and Commander. Do you like the bottom pads? How often do you rotate the ammo to rest the spring?

I've used several brands and found Wilson-Rodgers to be the best. They are made of stainless steel and are available in 7 or 8 round. They have a bumper pad and a polymer dished follower. Very positive feeding and lock-back. For a CCW, the bumper pad may get in the way. For competition shooting, especially combat, the bumper pad is super.

I wouldn't worry about the springs. Even the cheap mag springs seem to last many years when left loaded.

Anybody have experience with Chip McCormick mags? Just got my first 1911-A1, the Springfield GI. Just want something for plinking and casual target shooting, but not something that jams every other round. Thanks.

JohnV and greenjeans: I use the Chip McCormick magazines and find them to be problem free. Actually, I think they are some of the best magas I have ever used. I purchased half a dozen of his 8 shot mags and none have screwed up yet, and with the way they function I don't expect them to. I carry them fully loaded and shootem up about once every six months or so. No problems and I recommend them. I do not however use the bottom pads. HTH. Mikey.

Another vote for the Chip McCormick Mags! I have the power mags with bumper pad and the shooting star both 8 round. I don't comp. shoot so I prefer the none bumper mags. I think they are the BEST VALUE available

The only aftermarket mags I have used are the Mecgar mags. The ones I have are the 8 rounders and I think they are great in every respect. I strongly recommend them.

I bought one of the Chip McCormick 8 round Shooting Star just to try it out. Tried it out over the weekend and had no problems. They can be ordered from "Cheaper Than Dirt" for around $10. Have to pay shipping, but not bad if you order several items.

Have any of you used the Tripp Research 1911 Cobramags? I had not heard of them until I read a glowing report in the September issue of American Rifleman--"revolutionary new...patent-pending Cobramags...offer unparalleled reliability...for...hollowpoint and lead semi-wadcutter ammo." The author of the article was obviously sold on them. Suggested retail for an 8-round magazine is $44. Available at Brownells.

I have just heard about them, but he sure makes them sound good.

The only 1911 mags I have found to be troublesome are the original GI mags and Pro Mags. I bought half a dozen of the Megars and a half dozen of the McComics. Both worked equally well. Had to go with nothing but McCormics after I installed my mag well funnel . The base pads on the Megars are too wide to seat in the magwell with the mag funnel on. Thus far I have not seen the need to pay more.

I like the Mecgar mags too, and have several. Some years back, I tried a bolt-on magwell extension, but the Mecgars as stated, were too wide. I ditched the magwell.
Now, I've just installed a set of the old classic Fitz C45 target grips, and was concerned about this. Luckily, the Mecgars work fine. :grin:
I have one Wilson Combat mag, and wouldn't mind getting a few more. Great mags.

I have been using McCormick and Shooting Star mags for many years. I started with the Shooting Star 8-round conversion kits back in the late 80's/early 90's. I then moved to McCormick 8-rounds, and have been using McCormick Power 10 mags in USPSA competition for the past three years. I have absolutely no complaints with any of the McCormick mags.

I received a couple Wilson mags with my S&W SW1911. They fed fine, but hung in the receiver when trying to eject them. I had to return them to S&W for replacements. The new ones seem to work fine. Since I need the 10-round capacity for competition, they have been stabled in the factory S&W box....unused.

I have also tried some Metalform mags in 10mm and 38 super. Both seem like good mags overall, but I have had a problem with one 38 super mag failing to lock the slide back after the last round. Seems the plastic follower is slightly oversized and hangs up after the last round.

I haven't used my factory Colt mags in awhile, but they were reliable for me before I moved to the high capacity single stacks.

Add my vote for Chip McCormic Shooting Star magazines -- I've been using them for years, and they're perfectly reliable.

Wilson Combat, ALL THE WAY !!!!!
Expensive, but worth every penny.
Many 1911's have feeding problems solved by using this simple change to a Wilson mag.
The only mags that I have had consistent problems with (all 3 I have bought) have been Kimber mags.

Mecgar makes the 7rd mags for Kimber. I have used the 8rd Mecgars in the past with good success.
