QLA System in Encore 209 x 50
« on: July 21, 2004, 04:19:34 AM »
I'm sure most of the encore 209 x 50 shooters out there understand that this barrel has a built in false muzzle called the QLA system.  Thompson claims that it enhances accuracy by allowing for proper bullet alignment as well as ease of loading.  I have also heard that some gunsmiths have found this false muzzle to be off center of the bore, and thus have had increased accuracy by cutting it off and recrowning.

Has anyone out there had any experience with this.  I would be very interested to see what if any accuracy and/or velocity differences were on a before and after basis.

Thanks,

Smoky

I heard a story of a guy in SC that had a 209x50 barrel cut to 20" and crowned so he could shoot it out of his elevated shooting house windows easier.  According to the person who told me the story (a pretty credible source) the gun would shoot 2.5-3" @ 100 with just about anything it was fed before the chop, afterward he was getting groups around 1".  The guy worked up a new load after the chop so I don't know how much the cut/crown helped but since he was averaging close to 3" with several loads before cutting it down I would think there was an advantage to the cut/crown.  The person who told me the story is considering having his 209x50 barrel cut and recrowned so I believe the story.

Assuming that accuracy stays the same or improves with the chop, I wonder what removing 4 to 5 inches of barrel will do to velocity?

It will decrease you velocity a little, but not real bad. Also I have not hear anything about this QLA system. Now I will have to do some research. :)

T/C explains what they consider its positives to be in the Q & A section of their website.  Here it is...

Q: I've heard about T/C's new QLA® Muzzle System. What exactly is it?

A: T/C's QLA® Muzzle System (Quick, Load, Accurizor) is basicly a built in "false muzzle". Many old time target shooters used to attach a false muzzle to their rifle barrel for loading purposes, to guarantee precise alignment of the projectile during the loading procedure. They would then remove the "false muzzle" prior to shooting. The "false muzzle" also protected the rifling from being damaged or worn during loading. T/C's QLA® Muzzle is built right into the end of the barrel in all of our rifles permanently. It guarantees consistent alignment of your projectile in that its surrounded by steel for 360 degrees prior to being driven down the bore and engraved with the rifling. The projectile can't tilt, and the shape can't be altered (lead is soft) as it is started down the bore. This consistent alignment from shot to shot greatly improves the accuracy potential of the rifle by eliminating one of the variable associated with good accuracy... projectile alignment. T/C's QLA® Muzzle System also makes loading your second shot in the field much easier. You merely drop the projectile in the barrel and go straight to your ramrod, using short strokes. It eliminates the hassle of trying to align the projectile with one hand, and drive it into the rifling with a short starter.

i bought my encore from a machinist who couldn't get any consistency. he measured the barrel at the qla and it's off my several thousands. he cut it off and recrowned. now i have it, shoots like a dream. t/c tells me the warranty is void which i understand. They said I should have sent it back. with their wait times,  I'd probably get it back by next jan. I have no noticable loss of velocity. the barrel only loses an inch or so.
