Day 1 at gravel pit with Savage 93, ss, Syn.

Well they had a deal on the gun and the scope I didn't get past, so I took off for the gravel pit and started shooting the 17HMR using CCI TNT's.  IT is awful D@%# tough to remember that this little bullet is going 2600FPS and you can't pop one off right after another or it gets pretty hot!  When you get the barrel real hot you start chasing your last shots with scope adjustments and that is pretty stupid.  So  I slowed way down and the gun started to group real nice.  1/2" at 40 or so yards for 3-4 bullets.  This a lot of fun, I am no bench shooter, hell they would laugh me out of the place, but I am a hunter that likes to get my eye in shape and declare war on the wood chucks and red squirrels.  
This 17gr bullet went through a 4" solid piece of birch pretty stout!  There was not much but the fragments and the bullet cover crushed up but that it is a nasty little round and a lot of fun.  The trigger on all these guns is pretty tough and hurts by pulling shots.  I wish there was an easy way to get it down a few pounds with out taking pins out.  Do I like the gun?  Hell yes!!  I need to shoot some 20XTP for I will use it mostly on game.  This rimfire deal is what I was missing in my hunting shooting sport! All I really want is a crisp 3lb. trigger.  I am less than anxious to try the shim if it could cause a saftey problem though. How about your read on this.  This gun is great but the trigger has got to be 6-8 lbs.  I can feel it pull the gun off target.  Otherwise I like the balance of the gun and it seems pretty accurate. I need to try some other ammo.  Thanks for the help!   Buckfever

The only other alternative to achieve a lighter trigger is gonna cost $70-$80, that would be the Rifle Basix drop in trigger. I don't have a Savage, have to Marlin 917s with the Rifle Basix triggers and a CZ American .17hmr with a Brook's kit and an AS sear, all have less than 1lb triggers that break like glass with no creep. A good trigger is just part of the total package and as far as I'm concerned, just as important as the glass you mount on the rifle.

The gun likes the Hornady V-Max better than the TNT'S and I got it sighted in pretty good.  This trigger is going to get replaced by a riflebasix if I can set it high enough to hunt with.  There is a lot more accuracy that the barrel can't get done with the heavy trigger.  Before you think this is a reason to not like the Savage, both the Savage and Marlin had very heavy triggers. Get one of the guns and fix the trigger.
The ammo maker make a huge difference as to how it shoots, try them all. Love the balance for carrying this gun in the field!!
This gun needs to have a little more GENIE let out of the bottle!  Better trigger, and more practice for me.  Yea I thought I  was a better shot!

You'll find that even different lot numbers of the same ammo will shoot different, so it isn't just the ammo brand. When I found lot numbers that shot good, I bought a bunch more so that I'd have a good supply before having to sight in a new batch. Also, found that trying a different lot number of a brand that didn't shoot well, as in the remingtons, could well be an excellent load. CCI and Federal both have HP and BT loads, now, so be sure to try all of em, along with both Hornady XTP and CCI GamePoint 20gr loads. Overall, once you have several hundred rounds thru the bore, you'll find that it shoots all brands more consistent, but still different.

Well my gun and I are getting better, much better!  This rimfire deal is a finese thing.  My high power aren't as finicky, but they are not as much fun to play with either.  This is my first new Savage firearm and I am  impressed!  For not a lot of money this gun really shoots and will work great for hunting.  I have learned you must season the gun by shooting it so the barrel gets consistent while you learn how to shoot it.  This is a gas!!! Not better than hunting but right up there.

Oh if you thought you were going to hear from me everyday I am happy to tell you I have to leave the cabin til next weekend, I am sure everyone is relieved!      Buckfever

I am starting to see the trigger work in and it is not as heavy to pull.  I am a hunter and I need a trigger that you may wear gloves with so I wonder if a very light trigger is safe for me   Will a little reel oil help? I am concerned that a competitive trigger like the Riflebasix might be more than I need.  I am having a great time and am able to shoot a few 1/2" groups at 50yds.  As I said some not many.  I really like the balance and feel of the Savage to carry in the woods.  Thanks for your help in my re-discovery of rimfire.
