Which scope should I get?
« on: July 20, 2004, 05:54:27 AM »
I ordered two guns this week, both Tikkas.  One is a T3 Hunter (wood/blue) in 6.5x55, and the other is the original WH SS in 7mm-08 - both NIB.

I bought an Elite 4200 2.5x-10x-40mm from Jon at the optic zone recently, and I think that, since it's matte, I'm gonna mount it on the 7-08.  It should be perfect for that gun.

As for the T3 Hunter in 6.5x55, it has a blue finish so I want a scope that is glossy, not matte.

I went to the optic zone's website and saw that Nikon has the 3x-9x-40mm Monarch in gloss.  I have several Nikon Monarchs and I just love them, and think that this scope would be perfect for the T3 Hunter.

I was thinking about trying out the Weaver Grand Slams so that, as a moderator, I can give you guys more reports from hands on experience, but they don't make that scope in gloss.

So, I'm almost dead set and ready to place the order with Jon, but was wondering if any of you guys, including Jon, have any other suggestions or recommendations for me.

Well since I don't have ANYTHING that will crank past 7 power, I wouldn't opt for any of them. But of course that is just me. I have a 4x Monarch, gloss, I think that would make a dandy scope for the 6.5x55. Our perhaps a Leupold 4x or M8 6x36mm. Does Nikon make their 2-7x32 mm Monarch in gloss?

Yes, Nikon makes a monarch in 2x-7x, although I don't how big the objective bell is - I'd have to check the optic zone and see.  Still, I'm one of those people that likes higher magnification.  Actually, a 3x-9x is generally the lowest I'll go, except on guns like my .375H&H where I have an Elite 3200 1.5x-4.5x-32mm.

32mm on the Monarch 2-7.  I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would need 9 power for deer size critters and up. I guess that is what makes the world go round.

I don't get $4.00 a cup coffee or WSSM either, oh well.

Actually, since the objectives are larger (40mm v. 32mm) that means that they will be a bit brighter and, just as importantly, better eye alignment.

But you're right, some people are just a certain way.  Many years ago, a fixed 4x was the norm, and they believed that people with 6x were radicals. :)   Boy those people would just turn over in their grave if they just knew that people use 4x-16x and higher for big game. :)

BTW, I may not buy WSSMs, but I do buy WSMs and $4.00 coffees

Zachary, while you prefer the higher manification scopes you have already posted how well you shoot your .375 with the 1.5x4.5. That said why not try the Weaver GS 1.5x5 for a nice stalking rifle with quick handling or the Nikon 2x7? You did say you wanted more hands on experience. :)

I am loosing faith in you Zach.   At least some of the old timers can still do math. I will round off to make it easier, 25mm = 1 inch, so 1.541" would be approx 39mm, since he said that is the TOTAL bell size, it obviously can't be for the 3-9x.

Come on Zach..................no $4.00 coffee yet

You guys have to forgive me, I've been working all night in preparation for a brief that had to be filed with the Court this morning.  In fact, the courier picked it up right before I logged on.

Besides, you know us laywers, when it comes to numbers we can't add unless you put a dollar sign in front of it. :)

Sure, just let me know the exact date that you'll be in town.  My firm will be moving to another building here in Coral Gables in early August as well, so I don't know how that will affect work, etc., but definately let me know.  I welcome the opportunity to meet our members.
