What Catagory Do You Shoot?

:D   Howdy Ya'll!!

I am Frontier Cartridge shooter.  I shoot it "double duelist".  I've tried Gunfighter a couple of times, but I'm not quite ready for that yet!

I've always shot Duelist with black powder cartridge, but I understand that SASS has now created FC Duelist as a new catagory this year. 8)

:D   I guess these new catagories are fine for big shoots, but at regular monthlies there just aren't enough of us BP shooters to fill one catagory, let alone more.  I have mixed feelings about them.  I guess the fix to the REAL problem is to convert more shooters to SMOKE and BOOM   :-D

New to the game so I'm shooting traditional at the moment.

I must admit however, that some nights I wake up in a cold sweat hearing a voice calling me to the dark side. "More smoke, more boom!" it says, and the chant is getting stronger.

Started out shooting Traditional, but just couldn't picture my 1870s Texas Ranger SASS alias namesake shooting that way.  Switched to Duelist (now Senior Duelist), and hope to transition to Double Duelist this year.  Spouse, Texana Trueheart, shoots Traditional.

I started shooting Traditional with C&B revolvers but smokeless in the rifle and shotgun. When I got my EMF Dakotas I switched to Duelist. I never got the hang of the "Crossdraw Dance" during reholstering so went to two strong side holsters and Double Duelist. I shot Double Duelist all last year at matches but practiced shooting Gunfighter. I shot Gunfighter at the last two shoots last year and that is how I will be shooting from now on.
I practice at home by holding both C&B's out and cocking alternately 25 times each. That keeps my thumbs strong. I try to do that every day.

Yup! You have to use a double or single fer FC catagories. I use an antique Crescent Arms mule ear. I also have a Norinco 97 that was worked over by Coyote Cap and might try it in the Duelist Class this year just fer fun. But I won't use BP in the 97, it's too darned dificult to clean with BP!

I started shooting Duelist with the left pistol in the left hand and the right in the right at my first SASS match. Since the Gunfighter category came to be, I now shoot Gunfighter most of the time. If my arthritis is giving me trouble in one wrist or the other, I shoot Duelist with the hand that is working best.

Hey Red, if I shoot another match I'm going to try just that. Any tips on gaining strength in the offhand? I guess I'm not weak but if just feels awkward.

Practice, Practice, Practice!   :-D   I look like a gangsta when I shoot with my left hand.  Works easier for me to roll the top of the pistol to my right eye.  I know its not the most effecient way to do it, but I'm not known for effeciency.

Old Cane,
ButlerFord45 has got the secret. You can teach your left hand to do anything your right does.... it just takes some time. Dry fire practice will be a big help. Draw and bring the gun up and fire 5 or 6 times. Then holster and do it again. Do this four or five times and put it away. Do this exercise again after 30 minutes rest. The time off between exercises is important. You won't gain as much if you practice for an hour straight because, until you get used to it. you will get sloppy after a few repetitions. This will cause you to practice bad habits and make them permanent. Shooting position is also important. When shooting one handed, I keep my shoulders about 90 degrees to the target. I put the off hand (fist lightly clenched) just off the centerline of my chest. Pull back with the off hand as if drawing a bow: at the same time I push forward with the gun hand, keeping the elbow of the gun hand slightly bent. This sets up some tension in your upper body in a straight line toward the target and helps to keep the gun steady. Another technique is to tilt the gun slightly inward, about 5 degrees. This will help to lock up the wrist a little and also brings the sights a little closer to my dominant right eye. This tilt will cause the point of impact to change somewhat at ranges beyond 25 or 30 yards but at CAS (or self defense) distances with big targets it's not enough to worry about. The main thing is to get some practice. When you start to shoot matches with the non dominant hand, go slow enough to make the hits. Speed will come in its own good time.

I have shot Duelist right from the start. Now I am shooting with both hands (some call it double duelist) Also this year Im gonna shoot FC full time at my home club.
Seems like the smokey stuff should be shot single handed. Just my $0.02

CJ, I have found categories to be mighty tasty if done right in a well seasoned dutch oven. Don't knock 'em 'til you tried 'em.

Red, that's exactly why I'm wanting to do it in a double duelist fashion. With two straight draw holsters looks like I would need to turn my body (no easy task in itself) back to 0 degrees (straight ahead) to holster P1 and draw P2. If using the right hand for both guns I would have to turn back to the 45 angle to shoot so why not come all the way around to 45 the other way in one movement and go lefty? Is this why you guys do this or is it just for fun?

Old Cane,
Yes, the movement as you describe it, is more efficient but at the speed (if you can call it that) that I shoot it doesn't make much difference. I just do it mostly because it's fun.

I shoot Frontier Cartridge, but we usually don't have enough bp shooters to devide into classes so we end up calling it just "Black Powder". I've been practicing with my left hand shooting, so soon I hope to be shooting Double Duelist in FC, and maybe even give Gunfighter a shot! :-D

I used to shoot a lot of ipsc in the eary 80's and I would shoot with either hand. For me I started with a gun in each hand alternating shots and closing one eye or the other. After a few thousand rounds you begin to train your eyes so that they both stay open and you no longer tend to bring your weak hand gun towards your dominant eye.To this day ,when I go to the range , I split the shooting evenly with each hand. I doubt that I am very fast ,but I am almost as accurate with my left as with my right.

Dennis, I don't have the self-disipline to practice enough to do that well, or the time I'm afraid, I have shot with both eyes open for as long as I can remember.  I guess I need to "aim" with each eye till I get the weak eye working properly then go back to both eyes open.  Your method makes sence to me.  Probably what I really need is someone to teach me to shoot all over again.

I'm right hand and left eye dominate. I keep both eyes open and at CAS distances I do ok with my right hand. It's easy enough when shooting left handed to just let my left eye take over. That's the only benefit of being this way. Using the left hand is the hard part. I wind up shooting with one hand when left even when shooting traditional because I have not spent any time practicing cocking with my right thumb.
