Mark II Improvement?

Has anyone tried the after market kit that you put in to make take down easier for cleaning?  Haven't seen them for awhile.  If I remember right they might void the Ruger warranty too.

I took mine out yesterday  to range and afterwards took it apart to clean and it really is a pain if you haven't taken one down and put back together for awhile. :?

HappyHunter,
Know what you mean and I plan to shoot it alot more this year.  I found Federal Lighting shells on sale last year for $8 a brick and I got four bricks.  Everytime I wanted to shoot it rained  or seemed like it was going to.

Thanks for the website! Will have to check it out.

I've tried the aftermarket kit. You have to replace the bolt stop pin with a two piece bolt stop pin. The pin requires an allen wrench to disassemble the unit and allows you to pull the bolt out without having to take the mainspring housing off. You also have to replace the stock hammer. I found that the aftermarket bolt stop pin rested higher than the stock pin. As a result I was unable to use the stock sights on my Standard Model. I don't think it would be a problem with the Target Models. Needless to say I took the parts out and put the stock pieces back in.

The Ruger MKIIs are realy tight when new but after several cleaning and barrel/reciever removal they loosen up nicely and the takedown latch pin wears a bit it'll be fine.
And these guns aren't hard to disassemble and reassemble,It's always user error with the hammer and it's position when removing the bolt and reassembling.
Ruger MKIIs can't be beat for the Money.
Buy a MKM678GC the Competition Target Model in 6 7/8" SS

This gun is already the easyest thing I own to clean?

Mine is SS but have you tried that gun scrubber?

Just take off the grips, gun scrubber mess'es them up, and spray it down.

Operate the action a few times and spray again.

Brush and swab the barrel then I blow the whole thing off with an air gun.

A little WD40, operate the action and blow off the excess with an air gun and reinstall the grips.

I'm ready for about another thousand rounds.

Starting fluid works just as good as gun scrubber and it's only about a dollar a can. I've never even bothered to count how many times you get one cleaned on a dollar can of ether.

Ryan, I'll agree with most of your comments but I sure can't agree about using WD40 - that stuff can goo up your gun.  Heck I was at a bicycle repair workshop yesterday and THEY cautioned against WD40 too.

Now, you appear to clean your gun well so maybe you aren't getting any buildup but I'd sure recommend a good gun oil before suggesting WD40 - I've seen a few really gummed guns and had a gunsmith really rant about the stuff.

Ruger disassembly

One of the advantages of the MK II is the fact that no tools are needed for disassembly and reassembly.  Moreover, it's really not that complicated when you've done it a few times.  Use a paper clip or empty .22 brass to pull down the handgrip lever to get it started, ,ake sure you are aware when the hammer has to be forward or back, and it's simple.  My son's Buckmark requires an Allen wrench to disassemble, and to me the MK II is much more user-friendly.

Still haven't gotten that "Hard to assemble/disassemble" thing with the MKlls. Just cleaned two of um for a plate match tomorrow. Don't know how it could have been easier.

The hardest part about cleaning a Mark II, is finding a paper clip in my desk drawer, to pop the mainspring housing latch loose!   :)
