25ACP Primer
« on: July 18, 2004, 09:51:28 AM »
Hi:

I apologize for kicking a dead horse (I know this topic has already been discussed at length), but can someone explain this process in a bit more detail.  I understand the need for a weaker primer, and, how to get the modified breech plug, but what then.  Do you have to re-pack the primers yourself after you use them, or can you purchase them complete?  If you have to do the former, what's the cost of the necessary equipment and supplies, and, how complex and, "safe" is the process.

I'm an inline beginner with an Encore.  Like the gun, but have not yet had much luck with accuracy.

Thanks!!

If you buy the 25ACP breech plug it comes with 12 25ACP cases. You can order 50 or 100 from him at the same time. What you will need is a way to punch out the spent primers, I use my press with a universal decapper. I put new primers in with my Lee primer tool. You can get the Lee primer tool for under $20.00 with a shell holder for the 25ACP. You will have to look for a de-priming tool. I don't know the cost off hand. It is very safe to do. Not complicated at all. :) If you know someone that reloads I am sure they can put you on the right track.

If you do a search for "25 ACP", you get all the answers you are looking for. Be sure to use the "search for all terms" option. The search feature is at the top of the page under "Graybeard Outdoors".    hth,  Tim

Thanks guys - I'll check the WEB links as recommended.  I'm also concerned with the fouling from the primer affecting the action of the gun as well as the accuracy.  Hopefully this modification will help with that problem as well.

Try here for Info on the 25ACP breech plug.  http://prbullet.com/hornet.htm  You can also call them and they will help you out with any questions we may not be able to answer.  As far as fouling affecting the action of the gun, I have nt experienced it at all. And my accuracy has improved.

If you can't get decent accuracy out of your Encore, I would suggest simply switching the ignition system is unlikely to be your main problem.  It is much more likely to be something else, like that you have not yet worked up an accurate load for the gun.  Alternatively, Encores sometimes need to have the foreend modified to get good accuracy.  As long as the shooter does their part however, they are normally fairly accurate out of the box (with the right load).  I have heard the primer change reduces groups, but it's not dramatic like 6 to 1 inch or anything.

AndtHass, you are correct. He needs to work up a good load.
rjo3491, You will have to find what load and bullet shoot best out of your gun. If you have buddies that shoot different bullets, ask them to try a few to see how they shoot. When you find the one or ones that work best get a bunch of them and fine tune your load to it. I have found 2 triple7 pellets and 295 gr. power belts work great in my .50 cal Encore. I will be working on my sons .45 cal with the 25ACP breech plug.

if you reload, or know someone who does, order the universal de-priming die from cabela's (10.99). it allows you to de-prime without resizing.

Yes, I'm working on different loads, and, my accuracy isn't that bad - it's just not what I get from a rifle.  Currently, the best mix has been good 'ol TC sabots and two T7 pellets (I gave up on Powerbelts a long time ago - they never seemed to seat firmly, hence my feeling that the  209 primer  may have been lifting them off the charge - again, I may be full of crap, but right now I'm just experimenting ).  In fact, my last try with PB's had me in a stall next to a guy with an Omega who was shooting them as well - he wasn't even hitting the paper.  I gave him on of my sabots and viola, he put a hole in one of the corners!  This summer, I'm going to give loose powder (T7) a try and work with different loads from 80-130 grain - my thought is that I'll settle around the 90 mark, but I'll have to see what happens.

Much thanks for all your help.  My wife thinks this muzzle loading thing is idiotic - but I'm really hooked!  http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif

I just received my 25 ACP conversion today.  I must say it is a nicely made breechplug.  Can't say as I have ever seen a 25 ACP brass until I opened the box up.  Boy, they are tiny little things!  I sure like the way they fit into the breechplug, should be easy to prime the gun and remove spent casings.  I have a new Omega stainless coming any day now so can't wait to get it and set it all up.  I'm hoping for accuracy as good as the Black Diamond XR that I traded in for it.  The BD's best group was 3 shots at 100 yds. that measured .550" CTC.  The load I was using in it was 105 grs. T7ffg and a Shockwave 250 grain ignited by a CCI musket cap.  I am going to try the 250 gr. Shockwave/SST's and the 200 gr. Shockwaves out of the new Omega using the 25 ACP conversion with a CCI small rifle primer.  I am anticipating good results from it, hope I'm not dissappointed!
