Which HP Rifle out of box ready
« on: February 04, 2004, 07:31:15 AM »
I have shot some silhouette and have concluded 30-06 is too much to handle that many shots accurately.  Was thinking of getting something in 260 Rem?  What rifle would be good right out of the box, maybe just trigger adjustment for Hunter class?

out of the box?? I think that Rem 700 would do good in .260, but I have seen Sako and Tika rifles which were great in the accuracy but not in .260 caliber.
Unfortunatelly you do not have many choices for under $700- 1000 US in .260

Remington has little to offer the silhouette shooter if you are talking out of the box rifles that are presently available.  I just checked their website and the only model in 260 or 7-08 is their Mountain Rifle.  The barrel is only 22" and the contour is very thin.  I also do not like the factory Rem stocks for off hand shooting.  You should have no problem making weight with the mountain rifle!

I would argue that the Tikka or the Sako is the better option.  Do not get hung up on getting a .260, the 6.5x55 is almost the ballistic twin of the .260.  I have no idea what Win, Savage, etc. have to offer.

The other option is the Custom Hunter.  Use a factory production action with a factory chambering with a contoured barrel 26" or under and be 9lbs or under.

I opted for the Tikka WT synthetic (blued) as an inexpensive hunter class rifle. I went for a 308 because that is the least expensive of the available calibers to shoot ans I'm also already tooled up for it. The 308 is also a shorter action than the 6.x55, my other option. For a hunting weight rifle it is quite heavy. Mine scoped with a fairly heavy B&L and steel rings just makes weight. With this rifle I find recoil very tolerable.

The trigger is awesome as is this rifles out of the box accuracy. My biggest neg. in regards to silhouette shooting would be that it's plastic mag only carries three rds. and has to be removed to be recharged. Those all plastic mags. aren't cheap either.

mmmm...  if you can find one...  Sako TRG 6.5x55.  excellent off-hand stock.  well balanced. sweet action, very nice trigger, 5 round box magazine that feeds beautifully.  i get about 3" at 500 meters.
Thank you Dan.

7-08 Tika, 6.5X55 Sako-Tika, Styer pro hunter in 260. Neska Bay in 260
The 7-08 tika is the cheaper of the group and easiest to find next would be the pro-hunter, the Neska is by far the best as far as feel and quality.

I really like my Steyr ProHunter in 260, especially the two-stage trigger.

Savage makes quite a few models in 7-08. If your looking to save some money you might consider. They have the new trigger and the ones that I have are very accurate.
another option is CZ in 6.5X55. I haven't shot one, but maybe someone can give you some insight.  JOHN

Some of the CZs have set triggers. Watch out for that...they're illegal.

I wish we could find the TIkka 7-08 here in Idaho. No one has any and can not say when they will get them. From what I hear they are a shooter. Guess I will have to just wait a while

What's the reason for wanting an "out-of-the-box" rifle?  Price, or convenience?

AJJ--The set trigger rule in no longer in the book.
Coyote 2---Rifle sounds great but to heavy for the silhouette game.
Five Pigs---Up until a couple years ago the rules for the hunter rifle were written very strongly in favor of the out of the box rifle with very few changes allowed.  Those rules were stretched, pulled and squeezed by a few and the silhouette committee bent to them and opened the hunter rules up quite a bit.  So now, if the rifle makes weight and the barrel is tapered and not over 26 inches long and has a 2 lb trigger and the stock kind of looks like a hunting stock it's good.

I wanted an out of box for convience, but if something else will work that is fine.  Don't really want to spend over a 1,000 for the gun, so I thought that kind of left out customs.  What has been suggested looks good to me.  I checked out a Sako 75 and that thing was nice at about 1,000 dollars.

CIG, the Sakos are nice.  If you end up buying a 6.5x55 and need reloading dies, I have a set of Redding competition dies - never used - I'll sell you.

If you were to review a program from the national tournaments you would  learn the Rem 700 dominiates this discipline- at least in hunter class.  The most popular calibers are 7mm-08, .260 and .308.  Ringed rams with the .260 at our range are very common- not so with the 7mm-08 or .308.  The problem with the 6.5x55 (although a wonderful round) as well as my favorite the 7x57, is that you really need to go to a long action.   There is nothing wrong with a long action, other than it is a bit heavier, and their is lots of forward space being wasted.   Also, 6.5x55 American made brass is not made to the proper specs and does not fit the chamber or standard bolt face really well.  I have shot the .308, 7mm-08, 7x57, 6mm, .280, and '06 and have settled on the 7mm-08.  My next choice is the .308.   I've always wanted to try the 6.5x57, but not many gunsmiths have that reamer.  One can use 7x57 brass which will fit the chamber properly, and the ballistics of this round are pretty darned good.  This round of course would not have been allowed in hunter class under the old rules, but perhaps would be OK now- I'm not sure.  But, it would be allowed in heavy class.  Choice of weapon and caliber is really a matter of "whatever floats your canoe."  IMHO  Blamethewind

Coyote,

If you want a *silhouette rifle* go to a silhouette riflesmith.  The rifle you pine for is unsuited to the game and you can get a better made rifle for less money than that from any number of 'smiths.

Personally I liked  the 7-08. Cuz it is so easy to load. components are very plentiful. There is a ton of loading info on it. The 6.5s are great bullets the B.C. on them are problably the best except for the 50 cal (NOT SURE). But you dont have the same number of bullets to choose from. And if you get a rifle that is finicky (with the limited number of bullets to choose from) you can be in trouble. I have seen this happen to a friend of mine. He switched back to the 7-08 and his troubles were gone. I have seen rams lost with the 260 But downed with the 708 using 168 and 175 gr bullets. As far as  the rifle well look at your pocket book and go from there. The Tikka is one of the nicest rifle you can buy. But there is very little if any after market stuff for them. The remington you have a plethora of stuff to choose from. A good friend of mind has a very pretty Tikka but had a little trouble with the trigger. He still uses it but states the trigger costs him a target or two per match. I do wish you good luck in whatever you decide
