Firearm of Choice for the Fall Hunt(s)
« on: July 26, 2004, 11:39:25 AM »
I just got back form the range and decided on the 788 Rem. in .308 for the deer hunt.  The 7600 in .35 Whelen will be the backup. The goal is to put one deer on the ground and then bow hunt with the new BowTech.

The moose hunt is a closed case--------BowTech Pro40 at 65# with Easton Axis arrows and Thunderheads. I am getting about 99 foot pounds of energy with the setup so it should do it.

What is the plan for everyone else?

I'll be doing some local moose hunting this year, again, and will be using my 338 Win. Mag. and my 358 Norma Mag for that.

If I do get around and do a sheep hunt, I'll opt for my 270 WSM or my 300 RUM if it's ready by hunting season.

And if the 40 mile caribou herd is accessible this year, I'll opt for my 358 Norma Mag to take on that hunt and hope I can get a grizzly in that region (two grizzly bag limit yearly now in that unit).

I am going to use my Tikka in 300 Win Mag for my Caribou hunt coming up here in August and September.

I have my Matthews Legacy set up for deer hunting with Easton XX78 and Muzzy 125gr. Broadheads, set up at 70#

I will be using my Shiloh Sharps in 45-70 for deer with black powder cartridges and 510 gr. paper patch bullets and have my Remington 1100 12 gauge with Remington copper solids as my back up to the Shiloh Sharps.

Muzzleloading season, I am using my T/C Renegade with round balls and black powder on deer for the opening season, and my Encore with 295gr. Powerbelts and triple7 in the late season.   :D

I'll be using my 30-06 Handi with 165gr Noslers for Caribou up on the Taylor Highway in August.  I'll be using my Ruger M77 MKII in .338 Win Mag with 250gr Noslers for everything on the float trip.  Then after snow flies the Handi 30-06 will be the old stand-by for the snow machine the rest of the winter.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

300 win and 348 win

whoa, 'bou season is coming too fast for me to get ready.

I'll have the 300 win and 348 in the boat.  If I find animals close along the river I'll try with the 348 and 250 gr cast bullets - if I can get them loaded.

If I walk on the tundra I'll be packing the 300 with 180 Nosler parts, Speer hot cores, or maybe Barnes X.

If I get one down I'll try to hunt exclusively with the 348 - unless its raining buckets.  Can't beat that stainless 300 with plastic stock for the nasty days.

Might pack the 348 with some 250 gr Barnes originals come moose season.

I will be using my Ruger M77 30-06 for sheep moose and if I'm lucky and get time I might try it up around chicken for caribou in Sept.

Winchester 88 in .308 w/ 150 gr. Remington SPCL handloads.  Or the Marlin .30-30 w/ 180 gr. handcast bullets.  Once I have three deer in the freezer I want to take the Lyman GPR flintlock (.54 round ball) for the 4th one.

I finally got my "over 60" hunting, fishing and trapping license (had to wait for the birthday) and have my tags.  The middle boy is coming up from Seattle to help pack out meat and in general stomp around in the alpine.  It should be fun!
