Anyone else have this happen....
« on: February 09, 2004, 04:40:28 PM »
Hey everyone. Let me know if any of you know why I am experiance this strange phenomenon.

I have a Vari-X III 4.5X14X50 mounted on my .308 Winchester HVS.
When I look through the scope with the gun resting on the bi-pod legs the cross hairs apear to be slightly tilted to the right. This seems easy enough right, just twist the scope a hair left in the rings.
But, here is where it gets strange... If I compare the verticle portion of the cross hair to something that I know to be truely straight up and down it perfectly ligns up with the side of that object. I would expect it to gradually tilt away.

So what is causing this?

The cross hairs appear not to be truely straight up and down, but when check against a truely verticle object it is.

Any ideas?

I know this sounds stupid, but it is really bugging me.

Thanks!

Jonr

Simple, Your a half a bubble off plumb. Just kidding. I have seen this in a few scopes myself. I don't really know how to explain it either. Look through the scope and swear that its off a little, set it up to correct it and its fine. I suspect it might be a paralax thing. But I'm not really sure.   KN

Compare the reticle to the w/e knobs...  Is the reticle going thru the center of the w/e knobs?  Make sure the reticle is "square" within the scope.  Reticles do cant from time to time..would need to be repaired.

It appears to be square with the knobs.

Thanks!

Check it with a plumb bob or as I use a black boot lace with a weight on it. If the rifle is plumb and the recticle is parallel with the lace the scope is right on. If you don't need to move the scope in the rings and the scope still looks tilted it's an optical illusion.

I know only 1 thing that can cause this for sure. If you set your scope on your rifle by shouldering it and then lining it up and then shouldering it it can be crooked. remember your shoulder coupled with your distinct shooting style does not = flat...If you would come to my house and look through my scope chances are it may not appear perfect to you although I can keep the bullets touching at a fair distance
