.35 Remington?
« on: July 22, 2004, 12:53:49 AM »
The ONLY bullet I use in the .35 whether in a TC or a lever rifle is a 200 grain round nose. Usually made by either Hornady or Remington. You can get almost the same velocity from a 14" TC barrel as in the lever rifles. Say about 1800-1850 fps vs. about 2000 fps. It kills all out of proportion to the paper ballistics. Nice round.

My Super 14 in .35 Rem is one of the most accurate barrels I own, and I own quite a few.  I am partial to 180 gr. Speer flat nose or Hornady SSP bullets at around 2000 - 2100 fps, which is a max load.  I like H322.  The deer don't like it at all; they just drop.

I have a super 14" that was cut down by the previous own to a 12" barrel.  Love it.  I shoot 180 Hornady single shot pistol bullets.  I also like H322 in mine.  I hit a running deer broadside and it went maybe 10 yards.

I also use a lee loader to reload the round.  This way I am sure to only neck size and have not experienced any of the misfire problems others have experienced.

I have a very accurate super 14 in 35 rem.  I just bought another with a muzzle break because of the recoil.  I've been shooting 158 gr hornady xtp/fp.  they are extremely accurate, and shoot around 2200 fps with mid-range loads of AA2015.  With the muzzle break, even the 200 gr bullets are light on recoil.  I've just started with my load testing, and will most likely switch to H322 when i work up my target and hunting loads.  H322 is a great powder for most of the cartidges I load for.

I am shooting a 14" AA barrel.  I get an avg of 1936 fps with 180gr Hornady SS bullets.  I use H380 with great results especially on out there at 200yds.  I have used the H322 with excellent accuracy, probably better than the 380, but I like the way H380 meters (and I load .270, 30.06, 250sav, and 30-30 with it).

It is my favorite deer barrel and they don't go far.  I had trouble shooting the Rem. round nose factory rounds with them expanding enough at close range.  My deer are shot in THICK places and I don't need them going even 100yds.  The 180's expand very well and make a large wound channel.  Just my experience.

My favorite load is 39.5 grain of IMR4064 and 180 grain Speer Flatpoint.   Better in my Marlin that in the T/C but just a little.  It is a compressed load and consider it a maximum charge.   For 200 grain jacketed, my load is reduced by half a grain.  I've yet to chrony them so I don't know the actual velocity and have noticed they do shoot much flatter than factory rounds.   Loads are maximum so approach with due caution.  It may be over max. in your gun.

I prefer the 150 CoreLokts and the 180 Speers in my old Super 14 for deer.  With "safe" loads, no sticky opening or tight cases, I get 2339 fps with the 150s and 2104 fps with the Speers.  Loads average between 1.5 and 2 moa.  200 RN CoreLokts get 1969 fps, again in safe loads.  I use WW cases exclusively now, as I can load them about 50 fps faster than RP cases withthe same pressure signs.

Note that my loads do exceed those in loading manuals, but the .35 Remington is "underloaded" by modern standards.  Loaded to .30-30 pressure levels gives a nice velocity increase at what I consider safe pressures, but I don't recommend this for anyone else.

I had a 35 rem 14" barrel on my contender.  IT was a great deer round.  I chronographed remington factory 200gr RN @ 1900fps.  IT worked like a charm.  One shot stops on whitetail out to 150 yards.

I sighted my 35 rem 14" t/c on at 150 using 180 or 200 round nose bullets. That way I never had to worry about drop to nearly 200 yards. MY problem was the gun did NOT go bang every time ,so I had it rechambered to358 JDJ. It was and is very accurate.BTW,it goes bang every time now.  jh

thanks for all the replies guys, i think i might have located a barrel so i may give this one another try...

I will let you know...i like the idea of a 200gr bullet chugging along at 1800-2000fps

:D Here is what I tried in the T/C  .35 Rem 14 in and Custom shop 24 inch barrel: 200  Grain Hornady or Remington or Sierra round nose and 38.2 grains of H335 RP case WW Mag primer. It shoots very good and goes over 1900 in the pistol barrel.. In three years I used it on 4 deer and none went a foot.. Two with the pistol and 2 with the carbine.. A nice buck and a doe for each barrel. They all tipped over and the legs flew up in the air. We call it the "Smack Down Round"  for good reason. We also have been shooting the 180 G XTP seating it deep and to the 2nd cannalure as the bullet will crash into the rifling seated on the 1st cannalure unless you have a custom throat..  I use 28.3 g IMR4227 for 1986 avg vel.. Also just tried 29.7 G of IMR 4198 and did not clock it yet. Give it a try..   cbagman
