New member, need advice

Hey guys, I'm brand new to blackpowder shooting and I need some advice.

I recently ordered up a 209X50 barrel for my encore.  I'm anxious to start shooting and work up a decent hunting load.  I'd like to stay with loose powder and bullets without sabots.  

What powder do you suggest?  Pyrodex, GOEX, 777?  Also, do I really need a bullet starter with this rifle?  I subscribe to the KISS (keep it simple stupid) policy and really don't want to carry around useless tools.  I guess what I am asking, is what tools/accessories do I absolutely need?

Welcome to GBO :D , lots of info here for the new shooter. Using the search feature at the top of the page will help answer lots of your questions. My preference in my inlines is Powerbelt bullets and T7 loose powder. They load easy and shoot excellent in all three on my inlines. I prefer loose powder because you can fine tune the load with incremental charges and it costs less than the pellets. My huntin partner shoots the same bullets and gun but uses Goex, gets as good a accuracy as I do. CLean up is still the same reqardless, ya gotta clean it. The only diff between T7 and Goex is the smell and a couple hundred FPS velocity which at muzzleloader ranges up to 125-150yds, makes not much difference. I am limited to iron sights by BP hunting laws so don't feel comfortable shooting farther than than without a scope. If you can hunt with a scope, then the T7 will have a benefit for the longer shots with a little flatter tradjectory. T7 is easier to buy locally than Goex, also, so that is something to consider.   hth,  Tim

dbl bbl, first off Welcome  :D

If you have decided on loose powder, I would suggest triple7. If you do not want to use sabots, I would suggest the power belts. I have had great success with the power belts. I use triple7 pellets now and they are just convenient. I do not need a bullet starter for the power belts or sabots. I can start them with my thumb and push them home with the ram rod. Now that is simple.  :grin: You might want to try different powders to see what works best with you rifle also. If you have any other questions please let us know. WELCOME!!!  If you choose pyrodex, one thing to consider with the encore is blowback into the action. I wasn't aware of the problem, and ended up having rust form in my action. with the 209 primer, you get a fair bit of blowback. after you find a load that your happy with, you might want to look at a primer conversion. I switched to the 25acp conversion, and have no blowback into the action at all. food for thought after your done load development.
