When I got my scope the store sold me some used Leupold bases and rings for $20. I can't complain too much because they seemed to be in really good shape. These are the type where the ring base goes into the slot on the front base and you turn it to lock the ring into place. I've never done this myself and I was wondering if there is some sort of tool that makes sure the ring is alligned perfectly perpendicular to the barrel? I lined it up as good as I could with my eye, then I set the scope in the rings and used the crosshairs to line up with the end of the barrel on the lowest setting. I didn't tighten the back ring and adjusted the front ring with the scope centered and then tightened the back rings. Is this OK or do I need to have it done somewhere that has the equipment?

If you are talking about turn in rings, the front ring should be turned in using a 1" dowel or a 1" round iron bar, not the scope. Using the scope to turn in the ring can damage the scope. The iron bar can also be used to lap the rings with a mild lapping compound so the scope sits in the bottom rings perfectly square, otherwise when the rings tops are mounted, it could damage the scope. I used a screwdriver handle to actually turn the rings, I just put the scope in to make final minute adjustments less than a 1/32 of an inch probably. I don't think it hurt anything.

If you have the type with the two screws at back ring for windage adjustment I highly recommend you pull that junk off and toss it as far as you can.

That's the sorriest excuse for a mounting system ever invented. It is also the weakest and has ruined more scopes than ALL other systems combined. Ever wonder when folks say their top of the line scope failed after a few shots? Almost every time it has such a system on it.

Unless the front and rear rings are in perfect alignment and in alignment with the barrel they WILL damage the scope. Ever notice the ring marks on used scopes? They are from this type of ring and base combination and show the damage done. They are almost impossible to truly ever align correctly.

I prefer the dual dovetail base/ring combination where both of them turn in like the front does on the one I've been talking badly about. This is to me the strongest you can buy. Now alignment is still a problem but is easily solved IF you have the right equipment which I do.

What is strong and is the easiest system for a novice to install is a Weaver type base and Burris Signature Rings. This combination will hold up to recoil well and the Signature Rings assure perfect alignment and no scope marks. You'll hardly ever hear anyone say their scope broke when using these rings.

I took the scope off. No marks yet. I'll just wait a couple of weeks and spring for a new set of Burris rings and mounts.

At last check, MidwayUSA and Midsouth had the best price on the Burris signature rings.
