What Scope for a .223 Contender???
« on: July 29, 2004, 06:35:43 AM »
I want to get a .223 Rem. barrel for my Contender, but don't know which power scope to put on it.  I am thinking of maybe a 3 or 4 to 12 power, but am not sure.  What do you guys use for you varmint .223 Rem. set-up?  Also what brands did you favor?

Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Larry,
I put a Burris 3x9x40 w/ Ballistic-Plex reticle on my 223 carbine and couldn't be happier. :-D With a fairly mild handload and a 100 yd zero it's nearly dead on at 200 and 300 yds. using the respective ticks. (on 9x) Just like advertised :-)  An added bonus is that with 22 LR chamber adapter impact is right on @ 50 yd. using the 300 yd.  tick. (on 3x, changing magnification changes point of impact :? ) Makes the caliber adapter more useful as I can shoot .223 or 22 lr without any scope adj.
I know this is the Handgun forum but I believe burris makes handgun scopes w/ the B-Plex reticle also. Good shooting, G.
Hurrah fer mountain doin's- :D

I would go with the Burris 3-12 LER w/Bal Plex.

Mine is a 14" .222, and is set up for similar purposes as you describe.  I have a 7X Burris, and really like the whole arrangement, barrel and scope.

I have a 2.5-7x T/C on mine and it is powerful enough for me.

Mine is a .222 also and the 2.5-7 TC works great.  I have never seen a 3-12 pistol scope in the flesh, and wonder how hard it is to get the target in the scope.  Hard enough with the 2.5-7.  Sometimes I have to back away from the scope a couple of times before I get things lined up well.

Larry,
I guess the question I should have asked is what distances and what kind of varmints do you intend to use this barrel for?

Thanks for all the responses to my question.  As to the purpose of the set-up, it will be for ground hogs.  We have an abundance of whistle pigs in our neighborhood.  The ranges will be in the 100 to 200 yards.

I am not sure if they have the 3-12 range in a handgun scope, but thought that would be a good range to operate in.  The 3-9 would sound good.  Especially if it is a Burris with a ballistic plex reticle.  But if Burris has one like Xphunter stated, I may go with that set up.

I also plan on getting an extended forend with a Harris bipod.  That should give me plenty of control with the higher power scopes.

yep burris has the 3x12, and i reckon they quit makin the 3x9 model. they are super nice, imo!
something you could try, before layin down the cash.......a riflescope(maybe one ya already have). thats what i shoot on my 14" .223. i kinnda like it after trying it. it does give a wide field of view. you just have to be careful......possibly shoot low recoil loads, and adjust for different shooting positions.
i shoot blue dot powder and 40 gr nosler bt's at around 3000-3100fps with great accuracy, and much less muzzle blast. recoil is less with this load, and does make the short eye relief easier.

They no longer make the 3x9 or the 2  1/2x7.  You can not get an old 3x9 or 2 1/2x7 modified for the Ballistic Plex reticle.  The new 2x7 & 3-12 LER's can be purchased with BP or you can send it in and have it added for $50 if memory serves me right.  Of course you would want one with and Adjustable Objective.  You may not need 12x for 200 yards whistle pigs, but it sure is nice.  I have several Burris 3-12 LER's with Adjustable Objective & Ballistic Plex Reticle.  One even has target turrets.

I've used both the older 3x9x Burris LER Handgun Scope and the newer 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scopes on Super 14 .223's for Prairie Dogs on a few different occasions. For me personally I would opt for the 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scopes. I think they are the most user friendly of the higher magnification Handgun Scopes available, and offer a crisp, clear sight picture.

Good hunting with whatever you choose.

Don't overlook the Weaver 2.5-8x. I've got them on my barrels and I really like them and they're priced right too!
