Agreed on the bird sounds. I think it works so good because a bird going crazy at night just isn't natural. It also is death on grey foxes.

I start my coon stands with about 10 minutes of a woodpecker distress, followed by about 5 minutes of a coon fight, then repeat it. Usually the coons will come in, and climb a tree around you somewhere. Make sure to scan the trees really close 360 dgrees around you for at least 150 yards before you leave.

I would skip the birds and go right to the coon fight.........

Are there any hand calls that will work for racoons? There's a ton of them around my neck of woods. Would you hunt them just before dark?

Ditto what Bod said.   My coon squallers are way, way more effective than bird distress calls for coons.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Forget it. If you want to just kill as many coon as you can, get a carbide lite, if you don`t want to mess with carbide put a red lens on your electric lite and walk around the woods makeing alot of noise and shineinbg trees. A wooden spoon and a pan make a great noise maker and so does about anything esle. Walking and makeing noise works best in early season, but then so does any thing else.

Heck with all that running around ... thats what the dogs er fer :D
BTW ... using a red lens is NOT legal in my state, so you may want to check prior to saying hello to the warden at an unexpected time. Ya know... They just dont seem to come when yer expecting them
